TV Host Defends Martha Stewart Amid Halloween Costume Backlash: ‘Punished for Being Too Good Looking’

Martha Stewart has some unlikely defenders amid the backlash over her controversial Halloween costume.

The 85-year-old lifestyle mogul faced criticism after dressing as a homeless person for Halloween, complete with a sign indicating that she was hungry. But during a recent episode of The Girls podcast, Kat Timpf offered an unusual explanation for why Stewart’s costume generated so much controversy: She looks too good for her age.

“So I think what happened is this controversy, people being mad at her, is her being punished for being too good looking,” Timpf said. “Because Martha Stewart is 85 years old.”

Rachel Campos-Duffy immediately agreed, declaring, “I know. She looks unbelievable. She never looked better.”

Kat Timpf Says Martha Stewart Is Being Punished for Her Appearance

The conversation began with a discussion about aging gracefully and the pressure women face to maintain their appearance. Timpf argued that women can face criticism for looking older, but they can also be criticized for looking younger than their actual age.

She suggested that Stewart’s youthful appearance has created unrealistic expectations about how culturally aware she should be.

“She looks too good. 85-year-olds are not supposed to be expected to have culturally sensitive Halloween costumes,” Timpf said.

When Ainsley Earhardt asked whether being 85 should give someone a pass, Timpf responded, “I think so. If you’re 85, I think it’s fine.”

Timpf returned to her argument later in the conversation, suggesting that Stewart’s wealth, appearance and personality make people forget her age.

“She’s so witty. She’s so funny. She’s so with it. We forget how old she is,” Timpf explained, comparing Stewart to an elderly relative who might not always be familiar with changing cultural expectations.

“No, because they’re 85 and you let it go,” she said when discussing whether she would correct an elderly family member.

Rachel Campos-Duffy Says Stewart Shouldn’t Have to Apologize

Campos-Duffy was similarly sympathetic, although she acknowledged why some people found Stewart’s costume offensive.

The TV host praised Stewart for embracing her appearance as she has gotten older, contrasting her current image with the more conservative style she displayed during her early years as a lifestyle personality.

“But what I really don’t like this idea of making old people who are grandparents apologize for s–t. Like, stop. She’s 85. She’s 85, stop,” Campos-Duffy said.

Melissa DeRosa also questioned why Stewart needed to apologize, pointing to the businesswoman’s remarkable career comeback following her prison sentence.

“And then she came back and, like, had a new life with her friend with Snoop Dogg,” DeRosa said. “That was really her avenue back.”

She added, “But yeah, it’s like, she’s 85. Really, she needs to be apologizing for a Halloween costume?”

Earhardt was equally enthusiastic about Stewart, recalling hearing her speak at an event in Central Park and praising her friendship with Snoop Dogg. She also admired Stewart’s knowledge of plants and her long career building a lifestyle empire.

“I mean, good for her. I’m proud of her,” Earhardt said.

The Panel Acknowledged Why the Costume Sparked Backlash

Despite defending Stewart, the panelists didn’t entirely dismiss the criticism.

Kayce Smith pointed out that Stewart has a team around her and should have anticipated that dressing as a homeless person could generate a negative response.

“I do not care what she wears. It does not offend me whatsoever. But in this climate, she has to understand, and even though she’s 85, she’s got a team around her,” Smith said.

Campos-Duffy also acknowledged that Stewart’s immense wealth made the costume particularly sensitive, especially for people struggling financially.

“I think they just felt like, here’s this billionaire. Some people can’t afford rent, or people are going through a hard time. And she’s like making fun of them,” Campos-Duffy explained.

She added, “So it just felt really insensitive.”

Still, Campos-Duffy ultimately returned to the argument that Stewart’s age should earn her some leniency.

“But I think what’s interesting is we all agree she gets a pass for being old,” she said.

And Timpf remained convinced that the controversy might never have reached the same level if Stewart actually looked her age.
