‘Survivor’ Fan Favorite Explains Why She Refused Last Episode’s Challenge

Kristin Flickinger had a chance to compete for a spot at the Survivor 51 merge feast—but the live grubs on her plate were a deal-breaker.

After viewers saw her toss them aside during the latest episode, she explained her choice in an Instagram video shared Saturday, November 7.

The November 4 episode brought back a classic Survivor gross-food challenge. All 13 castaways had to eat two live grubs, with the first 10 to finish earning a seat at the merge feast. Kristin was among the three who didn’t complete the task.

In her video, Kristin explained that she had prepared for many aspects of Survivor but knew her weakness. “I know where my blind spots are, and one of them is the gross food challenge,” she stated. As a vegetarian, she found the sight of live creatures trying to crawl away especially difficult. She even considered using the sharp edge of her plate to cut off their heads, but realized she probably wouldn’t finish the task.

“Why would I kill creatures in a game for charcuterie that I wasn’t gonna win?” she asked. Kristin said she decided to set them free, tossing the grubs behind her. “And I got to tell you, I don’t regret it for a second.”

“We were all like, Kristin can forage her own charcuterie while they all have to watch Bra(o)dy eat. ?” one fan shared in the comments.

“Most relatable thing. I saw you toss them and say ‘be free’ and I was like yep that’s what I would have done ✔️,” a second shared.

A third wrote, “it was so cool when you did that! especially contrasted with Brady throwing the hermit crab. wish there were more pro-animal people on Survivor.”

The decision follows another major choice from Kristin earlier in the season. In Episode 6, she volunteered to stay overnight on Exile Island while Ori Jean-Charles and Sharonda Cox returned to camp with food. In exchange, she received a Tethered Idol, which initially could only be played on the other two players.

In a deleted scene after her return, Kristin told her tribe she had an idol but planned to keep its details private.“The twist is I’ve got an idol. I’m very happy about that. But I’m not going to share that with a single person,” she said. She later told the group, “It’s important for me to not over-explain,” as she tried to manage their questions about Exile.
