Actor Mark Pellegrino joined the Supernatural cast as the Winchester brothers' (Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki) ultimate adversary, Lucifer, during the show's fifth season. While Pellegrino appeared on a total of seven seasons of the beloved CW series, including the final and 15th season, the actor recently revealed he thought he had been fired from the show.
During the FAN EXPO San Francisco 2025, alongside his Supernatural castmates Jim Beaver, who played Bobby Singer, and Mark Sheppard, who played crossroad demon Crowley, Pellegrino explained he was notified that singer and actor Rick Springfield was taking on the role of Lucifer during season 12, which premiered in 2016, after it was announced at a Comic Con. He explained he was taken aback by the recasting news because no one from Supernatural had told him he was being replaced. Pellegrino then shared that he took to social media to share his complaints about the matter.
"I'm like, 'What the f--k?' So, I started this rage campaign on Twitter where I'm like, 'What the f--k.' I literally was so mad because I felt like I had a relationship with these people and they just broke up with me without saying they're breaking up with me,'" said Pellegrino during the November 2025 panel.
Pellegrino said that the situation was clarified after he was shown an email written by Andrew Dabb, who took on the role as co-showrunner during Supernatural season 12. According to Pellegrino, Dabb explained that Springfield's character, Vince Vincente, was just a temporary vessel for Lucifer, and Pellegrino would be back to play the character.
Pellegrino then said he was overcome by emotions upon reading the email and realizing he hadn't been fired.
"I burst out crying," said the actor at the fan convention.
After Supernatural ended in 2020, Pellegrino has appeared in several popular projects like 9-1-1, American Rust, and Murdaugh: Death in the Family, as reported by IMDb.
