Different Isaiah, Same Nightmare! Bulls 93, Pistons 108 – January 7, 2026

I assumed that, by being born in the 2000s, I was finally liberated from a Pistons player named Isiah haunting Bulls fans’ nightmares. Clearly, I was mistaken, because in 2026, an Isaiah from Detroit is still haunting Chicago.

The Detroit Pistons played without Cade Cunningham and Jalen Duren, their two best players, which wipes out any excuse Chicago could lean on about injuries. The Bulls actually played the better game for three quarters, but that fourth-quarter collapse will stick with them.

They’re back at it again tomorrow, but after the way this one ended, it’s going to take a lot to forget what we just witnessed.

    First Half: Ayo! Ayo! Ayo!

My favorite thing to watch with a depleted Bulls roster is their sheer want, and need, to run. As soon as the shot clock starts ticking, they sprint like it’s their last possession ever. By the first timeout, 12 of Chicago’s first 13 points had come in the paint. They tried shooting threes, but nothing was falling, 0-for-5 to start, so they put their heads down and kept attacking the lane. Whether it was an alley-oop to Matas or a tough Tre Jones layup, the Bulls understood the simplest truth in basketball: the basket won’t come to you, you need to get to it.

The first quarter also featured some great Ayo Dosunmu minutes, a guy I’m fully lobbying to get a starting role. He hit Chicago’s first three and finished the quarter with nine points. On paper, the Bulls had the better opening stretch, leading in bench points, points in the paint, and even fast-break points. But shooting 1-for-7 from deep, coughing up four turnovers, giving up a 13–4 run, and letting Isaiah Stewart go to work on Nikola Vučević was enough for Detroit to take a 30–24 lead.

Please, someone help unc Vooch, he’s getting killed out there.

The Pistons definitely had that home-court advantage multiplier going, knocking down both the easy looks and the tough ones. One thing I was really proud of with Chicago, though, was their effort on the offensive glass. In their last two games, they combined for just 12 offensive rebounds, and by the second quarter of this one, they were already at ten.

Isaiah Stewart was forced to the bench with foul trouble, and he basically took Detroit’s offense with him. The Bulls packed the paint with a zone and forced a four-minute scoring drought. The second quarter turned into a low-scoring scrap, bodies on the floor, guys fighting for every inch, all just to squeeze out a single bucket.

All of that, however, did not apply to Ayo. He was making it look easy.

Detroit clawed back, matching Chicago’s advantage in the paint and forcing five more Bulls turnovers, pushing the total up to nine. If the Bulls want to win, they need to find a way to neutralize Stewart, who looks well on pace to obliterate his career high tonight. Pistons up two at the half.

Chicago Bulls Player of the Half: Ayo Dosunmu — 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field.

Second Half: The Bulls Let It Slip

Chicago came out with some urgency. I had instant déjà vu watching Tre lob the ball to Matas again — one to start each half.

Vučević also reached 10 points, locking in a double-double with a little less than half the game still to play. Matas kept the momentum rolling with a block and a corner fast-break three on the same sequence, leaving the home crowd pin-drop silent. A 16-5 run to reward Chicago for their effort and their biggest lead of 7.

Stewart wasn’t about to stay down and let the Bulls walk over him. He buried back-to-back threes and then threw down a dunk over Ayo, pushing his total to 25 points and single-handedly keeping Detroit alive. The Pistons rallied, closing the quarter on an 11–5 run to trim Chicago’s lead to just one heading into the final frame.

The Pistons opened the final frame on a 7–0 run, taking the lead and putting real pressure on Chicago. Matas finally stopped the bleeding with a three to open the Bulls’ scoring, giving him his third 20-point game in four outings. The Detroit broadcast was literally calling him a Cooper Flagg clone.

Isaiah Stewart kept his perfect night rolling, setting a new career high in points. The Bulls still had no answer for the piping hot Beef Stew. Detroit had 21 points in the fourth with four minutes left, while the Bulls had just eight. Eight. The game was slipping away, and the Pistons stretched the lead to a game-high 12.

Chicago never recovered, falling 108–93, their third straight loss.

Chicago Bulls Player of the Night: Nikola Vučević

Vučević finished with 20 points, 16 rebounds and four assists.

    Numbers to Remember

With another loss to the depleted Detroit Pistons, the Chicago Bulls are now on yet another three-game losing streak. This is already their third streak of three or more losses this season, the others stretched to five and seven games. Matas Buzelis finished with another 20-point outing, his third in the last four games, and extended his career-long streak of games with 15 or more points to five. He also added four blocks, tying his career high and setting a new season best.

    — BullsMuse (@BullsMuse_) January 8, 2026 With this loss to Detroit, the Pistons remain a team that hasn’t lost twice to the same opponent all season. Chicago beat them on opening night, but hasn’t touched them since. Isaiah Stewart exploded for a career-high 31 points on 82% shooting, becoming just the third Piston this season to record a 30-point game.
