When I saw the news that Quenton Nelson was being traded from the Colts to the Seahawks, a part of me was bummed. Not only were the Bears’ next opponent getting a perennial Pro Bowl offensive lineman, but the thought crossed my mind that Chicago’s front office should have kicked the tires on a deal. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not giving up on Ozzy Trapilo as a long-term option just yet. But with Nelson on an expiring deal, I was curious to see if he could hold down the fort at left tackle for the rest of 2026 before Trapilo took over for 2027 and 2028.
Perhaps I wasn’t alone in having that line of thinking, as ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports the Bears were among the teams that had an interest in trading for Nelson before Seattle made the deal:
The Packers, Bears and Eagles were among teams that showed varying levels of interest in Quenton Nelson, per source. His market was strong. t.co/pdy9AKomZ3
— Jeremy Fowler (@JFowlerESPN) October 27, 2026On the one hand, I don’t love that Quenton Nelson is going to the Bears’ next opponent. But on the other hand, I don’t mind that he isn’t going to the Green Bay Packers. If I had a third hand, it would be weird and cartoonish, but I’d use it to point out that the Bears getting mentioned here hints at the possibility of Chicago’s front office exploring deals for offensive linemen ahead of the 2026 NFL Trade Deadline.
Are the Chicago Bears Looking For Offensive Line Help?
I look at the idea of the Bears adding offensive line help at football’s trade deadline the way Brett and Michael look at the possibility of the Cubs bringing more pitching onto the roster at baseball’s trade deadline. Because just as there is no such thing as having too much pitching in baseball, there is no such thing as having too many offensive linemen.
NFL INSIDERS SAY THE BEARS WILL BE AGGRESSIVE AT THE TRADE DEADLINE
Remember, Week 1 starting left tackle Braxton Jones is on injured reserve. The current left tackle situation features a third-year undrafted player (Theo Benedet) and a second-year player (Ozzy Trapilo) who is still working his way back from a patellar tendon injury that kept him off the field for all but two games this season.

Mandatory Credit: Mike Dinovo-Imagn ImagesAs for Quenton Nelson as a trade target, it makes sense to me. Nelson is one of the NFL’s best offensive linemen. He has eight Pro Bowl nods and has been recognized as a first-team All-Pro three times. That said, I’ve long wondered if his best position could be at left tackle. It is something I’ve been thinking about since he was a Bears draft target in 2018. Nelson has the size and tools to be a competent left tackle. Perhaps there were folks at Halas Hall saw Nelson’s availability on the trade market as an opportunity to upgrade their offensive line in a unique way by moving him to left tackle.
In the end, the idea of Nelson plugging a hole on Chicago’s offensive line is in the rear-view. But if this front office was enteraining the idea of swinging a trade for the former Colts offensive lineman, I would not rule out the possibility of the Bears exploring other offensive line options as well. Stay tuned.
