Cubs Farm Director Jason Kanzler is Getting Along Pretty Far in the Process for the Mariners’ Managerial Gig

While one important member of the Cubs hitter development group stays (John Mallee), another is moving along with the process of a potential departure.

Cubs farm director Jason Kanzler has been mentioned as a candidate for the open Mariners managerial gig, and now he’s going for an in-person interview:

Sources: The Mariners are bringing in Joe Espada and Jason Kanzler to Seattle this week for in-person interviews for their managerial vacancy. Plus, another name they interviewed that is no longer in the running, and a follow-up on Stephen Vogt… t.co/4Vc2bdZ3tw

“The in-person interviews for Espada and Kanzler will feature a carwash of meetings, spanning ownership, the front office and members of the coaching staff that were retained for 2027, among others. Some within the organization that will be included in this week’s process explicitly flew into town to take part, in addition to Espada and Kanzler.

It’s unclear if this represents a “finalist” stage — though for both candidates, it will be their third round of interviews, following virtual meetings earlier this month. The in-person confabs will be the first that include the Major League coaching staff.”

If Joe Espada and Jason Kanzler do wind up the finalists (Rocco Baldelli was reportedly also moving along in the process before pulling out), it marks two very different approaches to filling the managerial seat. Espada, 51, has spent the last decade and a half as a big league coach and manager, while Kanzler, 36, was briefly a big league coach with the Astros before spending the last few years as the director of player development with the Cubs.

From our previous discussion on Kanzler and the Mariners:

The superficial way to describe this one is that there’s divisional familiarity, the Mariners’ big issue has been the offense, and Kanzler has helped lead a very strong procession of offensive graduates from the Cubs’ farm. He does have a relatively broad base of experience, though not having coached recently on a big league staff could be viewed as a hurdle to an immediate managerial transition in a new organization.

I don’t doubt the interest here is sincere, and we’ll have to see how this plays out. But it’s also the case that, with a rising talent like Kanzler, it only helps for him to have his name out there when attached to jobs like this. Maybe it means some extra money or responsibilities from the Cubs. Maybe it means more coaching or managerial opportunities in the future. Maybe it means the Cubs do whatever they can to keep him in the years ahead.

It’s also-also the case that, if the Mariners had keyed in on Joe Espada as their preferred target and wanted a little leverage in the negotiations, they would be served getting in some additional impressive names for conversations (and letting that out into the world). Maybe I’m just being hopeful that the Cubs won’t get poached.

In any case, I wouldn’t be thrilled to see the Cubs lose Kanzler at this moment in time, but you have support a guy’s chance to move up if it comes along.
