The Denver Broncos are 5-2 after the first seven weeks of the season, overcoming a brutal six-game gauntlet to start the year.
Broncos Country sent in their mailbag questions following Denver’s win against the Arizona Cardinals.
Denver Broncos Mailbag Week 7
It’s been a while since we fired up one of these. I’m aiming to do more of these going forward, but the content game is demanding, and I’ve been in the process of moving during the season. Happy wife, happy life!
What is Broncos Country wondering after Denver’s win on Sunday?
Why do the Broncos stick with the O-Line grouping they have and not try something new? Move guys from center to guard, etc.?! – Andrew L.
Great question, Andrew. The Broncos’ offensive line has not been the unit the national media outlets have portrayed them to be. Last year before his injury, it was clear that Bo Nix’s ability to avoid sacks was a big reason for the success and optics of that unit.
This year, we hadn’t seen that from Bo until Sunday’s game against Arizona. It’s clear that left guard Ben Powers is struggling with consistency in run blocking and in pass protection, and it’s understandable knowing that he’s coming off of a lisfranc injury.
Lisfranc injuries are tough to overcome, even for the best athletes. I imagine it’s a challenge for bigger guys. He took a pay cut and is in the final year of his deal, and they re-signed Alex Palczewski to a two-year deal this offseason. In my opinion, it doesn’t hurt to change it up to see if that side of the offensive line sees a boost in consistency.
Also, everybody is talking about trading for Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor. I’d rather they try to acquire Quenton Nelson to pair him with Quinn Meinerz as Denver’s top guard duo.
What else do Jonah Coleman and RJ Harvey need to do to get more touches each week? – Jason P.
I think we might be seeing this transition take place already. Against the Cardinals on Sunday, Jonah Coleman played 30 offensive snaps, which were the most of any Broncos back. RJ Harvey had 16 snaps, while J.K. Dobbins took a backseat after the first series with 14 snaps (23%).
RJ this season has been one of the Broncos’ most explosive players on offense, movement-wise, and with more touches, I could see him doing even more damage in the explosive play department.
Sean Payton always tells us that it’s hard to feed three backs and that generally you can feed and feature two, and right now it seems like Coleman and Harvey are grabbing more snaps.
What’s your assessment of the CB position these past few weeks? I’ve been very impressed with Kris Abrams-Draine. At this point, I’d prioritize an extension for McMillian over Moss, given how KAD and Barron have played. – Chad W.
Great points, Chad. This might be the defensive back in me, but I’d love to pay both Ja’Quan McMillian and Riley Moss; realistically, that doesn’t seem like it will be possible, considering Denver also has to find a way to pay Brandon Jones.
I’m a huge Riley Moss believer, but from a football business standpoint, the smart decision right now for Denver would be to take care of McMillian and Jones extensions, especially because of what you pointed out about KAD and Jahdae Barron.
I’ve been impressed with how KAD and Barron have played in Patrick Surtain II’s absence. They handled that workload very well and gave Denver breathing room in the secondary.
What is the update on Jaylen Waddle, and do you think PS2 and Huf will be back this week? – Broncos__21 on Twitter.
I haven’t heard anything specifically regarding Waddle’s injury, but Sean Payton’s post-game press conference and how he brought up that the play was a “dumb” call.
“Why didn’t anybody ask me about the dumb reverse call,” Payton asked after the game. That would be one of the first calls. Alright, I’m going to answer. Everyone ask the question. It was awful. I’m sorry. If you look it up — in 2008, in a similar situation, even a more radical reverse, (former Saints RB Reggie Bush) fumbled (and) Tampa Bay beat us. I know better.”
Just having been around Sean, the fact that he brought this up without being asked gives me belief that Waddle will ultimately be okay, but we’ll have to wait and see.
PS2 is trending towards returning against Kansas City. I watched him last week in practice, and he was moving well, but with how Kris Abrams-Draine and Jahdae Barron have been playing, it didn’t surprise me that the team focused on giving him another week to get right even more.
Hufanga is the unknown right now. We did not see him last week at practice. If he’s not spotted Wednesday when the team returns to practice, I don’t think he’ll play this week.
Did you notice that Ehlinger was sitting and talking to Bo on the bench? What’s the likelihood that he would be the number two QB? In my opinion, from what I have seen of his play, he would be the likely replacement for Bo. – Mike G.
Hey Mike, that’s what Sam Ehlinger and Jarrett Stidham have typically done all season long during the games. They and Logan Kilgore consistently gather after a series and look at the iPad to watch what took place during the drive.
I think next year there is a chance that Ehlinger could end up as Bo’s backup, but it also would not surprise me if they keep the QB room the same with those three guys.
I don’t see the Broncos even remotely thinking about replacing Bo, and if they ever did get to that point, I’m not sure Ehlinger would be their option.
Is there any chance that Ben Powers is running out of time and someone else will be traded for or someone currently on the team given a chance? – Wes C.
Good morning, Wes. I do think that Powers’ time is running out right now, naturally, due to him being in the final year of his deal and taking a pay cut, and because of that, if his struggles persist, the Broncos could look to Alex Palczewski to take over.
My theory is they could be waiting for Frank Crum to return, so that Crum could take over Palcho’s role as the designated ‘reporting as eligible’ option.
Powers has been very important in his time in Denver, but it’s clear that the Broncos offensive line and he in particular have struggled this year, at least according to the eye test.
