Wolff tells Marko he’s wrong about Russell’s F1 future

Toto Wolff has brushed aside Helmut Marko’s gloomy verdict on George Russell’s F1 future and championship prospects, insisting that Mercedes’ under-pressure Briton still has everything required to fight for the sport's biggest prize.

The former Red Bull advisor believes Russell has already lost his status as Mercedes’ leading driver after being comprehensively outshone by team-mate Kimi Antonelli in 2026.

Worse still, Marko doubts the 28-year-old will ever get another opportunity to challenge for the world championship, regardless of the team.

Wolff, however, is having none of it. While conceding that Russell has struggled to match Antonelli this season, the Mercedes team principal believes the circumstances surrounding the youngster’s remarkable rise have complicated his team-mate’s campaign rather than exposed any fundamental shortcomings.

Marko delivers a brutal verdict on Russell

Mercedes entered the 2026 season with a competitive car under the new technical regulations, handing Russell what appeared to be an excellent opportunity to mount a sustained championship challenge.

Despite winning this year’s opening round in Australia, the British driver quickly found himself playing catch-up after Antonelli exploded onto the scene, winning five consecutive races early in the campaign and establishing himself as the man to beat.

Although Russell briefly regained momentum after the summer break, a combination of handling difficulties and reliability misfortune prevented him from seriously threatening his 20-year-old team-mate.

Antonelli’s ninth victory of the season in Austin, where Russell could manage only eighth place, further underlined the widening gap between the two Mercedes drivers.

For Marko, the changing hierarchy is already settled business.

"Russell is no longer the number one driver," declared the former Red Bull advisor, who departed the team at the end of 2025 and now offers his opinions as a Sky Germany pundit.

"Antonelli has quite clearly taken that spot from him. I doubt whether he'll ever have another chance at the world title or be given number one status anywhere."

It was a particularly damning assessment of a driver who arrived at Mercedes with considerable expectations, having established himself as one of the grid’s most consistent performers during his previous campaigns.

But Wolff sees little reason to write off Russell’s ambitions based on one difficult season alongside an exceptional young talent.

Wolff backs Russell to bounce back

The Mercedes chief did not take Marko’s comments as a personal affront, although his description of their relationship suggested that the two Austrians are hardly inseparable friends.

"Helmut, he's my Austrian not-so-buddy, but I respect his opinion," Wolff said. "But I think he's wrong on George. George has all the ability. I think the car doesn't suit him."

Wolff’s defence rests on the belief that Russell’s difficulties have been compounded by a car that does not play to his strengths, while Antonelli’s extraordinary emergence has created an additional psychological challenge.

"I think that at the beginning of the season it's maybe difficult to cope with a situation where you're feeling like this is my year to come, and then you have this wunderkind [wonderkid] on the other side that starts to really chip away."

In Wolff’s view, that combination should not erase the evidence of Russell’s ability accumulated long before Antonelli became his team-mate.

"And I believe that in a new season, George, if we provide him a quick car, he has absolutely what it takes to win a championship."

The Mercedes boss was equally dismissive of the suggestion that Russell’s current predicament should overshadow his earlier achievements.

"So, I think it's a bit too easy to say, let's forget about all these years where he won in F2 and F3, his rookie years and the European championships back-to-back in karting, that's still all there,” he said.

The immediate challenge, however, is to salvage what remains of Russell’s 2026 campaign.

Antonelli heads into this weekend’s Mexico City Grand Prix with a commanding 123-point advantage over his team-mate, with 125 points still available across the final five races.

If Russell wins at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, Antonelli would need only ninth place to secure the title and become Formula 1’s youngest-ever world champion. Should Lewis Hamilton take victory instead, a tenth-place finish would be sufficient.

Russell’s championship hopes are therefore hanging by a thread. But while Marko appears ready to close the book on his title ambitions, permanently, Wolff insists that one season of playing second fiddle to a rising star is no reason to write off the Briton’s future.
