The second year of on-campus College Football Playoff games are complete, with compelling action in 2025 coming from the Alabama-Oklahoma game in Norman and the Miami-Texas A&M contest in College Station.
The CFP field could get reworked and expanded in the coming years to 16 teams or perhaps more, and ESPN’s College GameDay crew voiced its opinion about the desire for more on-campus games as part of the process during the Hurricanes-Aggies pregame.
“We need more of them. The NFL goes all the way through the AFC and NFC championship games. The bowl games have to be a part of it, but it would be great to see if this thing expands to 16 teams the first couple rounds being home field,” Kirk Herbstreit said.
“No one ever thinks about the fans. And if you have more home games, you help them out,” Rece Davis added. “You help the atmosphere out, the travel out, everything.”
“The average fan, they can’t travel to all these games when we have them at neutral sites,” former Alabama coach Nick Saban said. “You should get rewarded for winning so that you can play at home. The atmosphere (Friday) night and the atmosphere in this place – that’s what college football is all about.”
The Playoff format for the 2026 season and beyond has yet to be decided. We’ll see if the next agreement includes more games on college campuses.
