Prep sports weekly wrap-up: Numerous local hoopsters among state’s best

Relatively speaking, the winter high school sports season may still be in its infant stages.

But it certainly isn’t too early for many of the area’s top boys and girls basketball players to begin making an impression on a statewide level.

    According to statistics kept on national high school sports platform MaxPreps.com, numerous local athletes are among the state’s leaders in various statistical categories.

    As far as boys hoops go, Windsor’s standout senior guard Madden Smiley is fifth in Class 5A in scoring, averaging 22.5 points per game on an impressive shooting percentage of 53%.

    Three local athletes are in the top 10 in scoring in 3A. Windsor Charter junior shooting guard Dayton Long is third (25.4), Platte Valley senior Regan Edstrom is fifth (25), and Resurrection Christian senior combo guard Egan Koenig is eighth (23.7).

    Long is also ninth in 3A in rebounding with 11.4 rebounds per game.

    Union Colony junior Noah Herndon is 2A’s second leading scorer, averaging 22 points per game. His senior teammate Tanner Sarchet is fifth in the class in scoring at 20.3 points per game.

    Eaton senior center/power forward Austin Crider is eighth in 4A in rebounding with 9.2 boards per game.

    Union Colony senior Pablo Mendoza-Munoz is sixth in 2A in rebounding with 10.3 per game. Sarchet is seventh with 10 per game. Sarchet also leads 2A in assists per game (6.3), while Mendoza-Munoz is third (4.7). Herndon is seventh (4.3) in assists.

    University senior guard Coehn Nitzel is fourth in 4A in assists with 5.3 per game. Eaton senior guard Ely Madaleno is eighth with 4.8 per game.

    Frontier Academy junior Jackson Belt is 10th in 3A in assists with 4.5 per game. Briggsdale senior Scot Francis is seventh in 1A in assists per game with 5.5.

    Union Colony senior Daniel Vazquez is second in 2A in steals per game with five per game. Sarchet is seventh with 4.3 per game.

    Frontier Academy 6-foot-8, 210-pound junior Owen Steward is ninth in 3A in blocks with 2.2 per game. Union Colony’s Mendoza-Munoz is tied for first in 2A in blocks with 2.7 per game. Sarchet is eighth with two per game.

    Briggsdale sophomore Kaden Sanders is sixth in 1A in blocks with 2.5 per game.

    Leaders galore

    As for girls hoops, Prairie junior forward Hannah Kugler leads all classifications in scoring with 31.2 points per game on 47% from the field. She also leads 1A in rebounding, averaging an eye-popping 18.5 per game, which is second among all classes.

    Union Colony senior Soliana Gebremeskel is third in all classes, and first in 2A, in scoring, averaging 27 points per game on 38% shooting. She is also first in 2A in steals per game with 8.8 per game and eighth in rebounding with 9.6 per game. She is third among all classes in steals.

    Eaton junior guard/forward Courtney Steinkamp leads 4A, and is fifth among all classifications, in scoring. She averages 26.5 points per game on 47% shooting.

    Severance junior combo guard Zoey Smith is seventh in 5A in scoring with 18.2 points per game, while shooting 47% from the field.

    Resurrection Christian senior combo guard Bethany Vrooman is seventh in 3A in scoring at 14 points per game.

    Briggsdale junior Bailey Loyd is seventh in 1A in scoring with 16 points per game.

    Northridge junior Sophia Carbajal and Roosevelt senior Kyla Lin Hollier are tied for second in 5A in rebounding, each averaging 13 per game. Rough Riders junior Ava Grosboll is 10th in 5A in rebounding with 10.3 per game.

    Union Colony senior Jaelynn Valdez is first in 2A, third among all classifications, in assists with 5.8 per game. She’s also sixth in 2A in steals per game with 6.4.

    Windsor junior point guard Paityn Deselms is fifth in 5A in assists with 3.8 per game.

    The defending 4A champion, University, has two players in the top 10 in 4A in assists: senior guard Natalie Trujillo (8th, 3.3 per game) and senior swingman Natalie Galindo (10th, 3.0 per game).

    Platte Valley senior Addy Grossnickle is tied for 10th in 3A in assists with 3.3 per game. Briggsdale’s Loyd is tied for 10th in 1A with 3.3 assists per game.

    Greeley Central senior shooting guard Aaniya Davis is tied for eighth in steals per game, averaging 5.7. Resurrection Christian junior guard Tatum Van Pelt leads 3A in steals with 8.7 per game. She’s fourth among all classes.

    Platte Valley’s Grossnickle and sophomore guard/forward Bryla Bunting are tied with each other for fourth in 3A in steals, each averaging 6.7.

    Briggsdale senior Claire Brown is third in 1A in steals with six per game.

    Valley senior forward Jazmine Frias is seventh in 4A in blocks per game at a mark of 2.8. Union Colony senior Nadene Chacon is sixth in 2A in blocks per game, averaging 2.6. Chacon’s star teammate, Gebremeskel, is tied for eighth in 2A in blocks, averaging two per game.
