Something stands out in the statements from Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and the NFL about the latest with the Bears’ stadium situation. But before we dive deep into that mess, let’s read through the statements.

First, from the office of the Illinois governor (h/t Paris Schutz):

“The Governor’s Office has remained in conversation with the Bears about their plans in Illinois throughout the summer.

“Today, Governor Pritzker was grateful to meet in Illinois with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, Pat Ryan, Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch, Rep. Kam Buckner, and Sen. Bill Cunningham.

“The Governor and General Assembly leadership were glad to participate in a productive meeting focused on keeping the Bears in Illinois and protecting taxpayers.”

And now, from the NFL (via NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport):

“The NFL appreciated the opportunity to meet with Governor Pritzker and legislative leaders today. Timely action is essential as the Bears work to find a long-term stadium solution for the club and their fans.”

Does anything from the statements above stand out to you?

Two things stand out most to me. First, that line about the Bears and Illinois staying in contact throughout the summer. So much for the “sole focus” being on Indiana. Granted, I never believed that. If you’recall, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell met with Illinois officials less than 24 hours after Chairman George McCaskey and President Kevin Warren maintained their public stance that building in Hammond was their priority. The NFL commissioner and Illinois’ governor both confirmed the meetings.

Second, and possibly most noteworthy, is Kevin Warren’s absence. The statements above do not include the Bears president/CEO. It is eye-opening that Warren isn’t named while Pat Ryan, a prominent Bears board member, is taking part in these meetings. Warren, who helped the Minnesota Vikings build US Bank Stadium, was brought in to deliver the finishing touches on a Bears stadium deal. If he isn’t involved in these meetings, what exactly does he do around here? Chairman George McCaskey isn’t mentioned either. All things considered, maybe that’s for the best.

This isn’t the first time Warren has been left out of a stadium update. Back in September, we covered a report about Bears executives meeting with Illinois officials, headlined by Pat Ryan’s arrival and Warren’s absence. It felt telling that the billionaire part-owner of the team, who just had his hand in the building of Northwestern’s new Ryan Field, was suddenly in the picture. This is something to monitor as this story develops.
