Long as an International Player and Depth Piece, Development, Hsu, Marmol, and Other Cubs Bullets

A little Black Friday Bears football for us today. We’ll see how the team fares against the Eagles, but it’s going to be fun to see them in the spotlight. It’s hard not to enjoy the competitiveness of this team, regardless of what the advanced stats say about how well-earned their 8-3 record is …

Taiwan is reportedly trying to get Cubs prospect Jonathon Long to play for the team in the upcoming World Baseball Classic (I believe his mother is Taiwanese), which I really hope happens. There’s always a little risk when players go outside the org, but the upside of playing in high-stakes international competition, being around new and different players, learning about yourself and about the game, etc., etc. There can be so much developmental value there. I don’t want to overstate the parallel, but I’m reminded of Matt Shaw playing for Team USA last year, and getting a chance to kinda be thrown into the fire at third base. He barely had any experience there, and was still working at developing the skills. He came out of that experience with very high marks at the position, and then we saw how good he was this year at third base. Obviously Shaw put in a whole lot more work than the international games and practice, and he deserves the credit for making himself into a great defender at third. But I just wonder if the urgency of that international stage – and some new and different players and coaches to bounce off of – helped the process. From the team’s manager, Mike Scioscia, last year to the Japan Times:

“I talked about our young players in this experience, and I don’t know if anybody benefited more than Matt Shaw did,” Scioscia said. “From when we started working out about a month ago in Arizona and where he ended up. He had the opportunity to work with two of the best infield coaches that we have in the United States — Dino Ebel and Keith Johnson. The work they put in with Matt — it paid off quickly. You saw him play great defensive third base in this tournament. It’s a newer position for him, but with the Cubs, I think that’s where they’re projecting him to play as he gets in the major leagues. On the defensive side, he improved so much in just one month.”

Long isn’t quite yet on the radar for an immediate starting job in the bigs in 2026, but he showed – as the player of the year in the org – that he can dominate at Triple-A (.305/.404/.479/131 wRC, 13.0% BB, 19.1% K). He’s a corner infielder by trade, with a little experience in left field. His best spot is first base, so you could squint and imagine a bench job for him, sometimes spelling Michael Busch or Ian Happ against tough lefties. But it’s pretty hard to succeed in the big leagues as a rookie in that kind of role, so we’ll see what the Cubs elect to do. Although Long raked at Iowa last year, it’s not as if he couldn’t perhaps work on a little more elevation at the plate. All that said, even if he’s back to Triple-A next year to open the season, it’ll be good to have Jonathon Long available in the event of an injury on the big league roster. The Cubs also have Owen Caissie, Moises Ballesteros, and Kevin Alcantara factoring in, depending on the nature of injuries and offseason additions, but still. Long hit the ball SO HARD last year, it’s easy to dream. There’s a report going around that Taiwanese ace Jo-Hsi Hsu is going to choose to go to Japan instead of MLB, but nothing is yet confirmed. The only stateside club to which he’d been connected in a public report was the Dodgers. The Cardinals are reportedly having extension talks with manager Oli Marmol, which may lead to jokes, but I actually think it could make sense now that they’re transitioning into a pure rebuilding phase. For one thing, continuity could help. For another thing, you never know which managers might be particularly good at the “steward” role, even if not at the “try to win games” role. Mike Shildt’s retirement from the Padres didn’t last too long, as he’s now been hired to a player development role with the Orioles. The quick hire would seem to suggest there was a little smoke to those reports about the Padres and Shildt having some irreconcilable differences, rather than Shildt actually simply wanting to retire.
