When Chicago Bears training camp opened last week, head coach Ben Johnson said that there would be competition for the starting center position between veteran Garrett Bradbury and rookie second-rounder Logan Jones. While that’s probably still true, it feels like Bradbury is in the driver’s seat.
As Matt Rooney wrote earlier this afternoon, it’s still early, but it feels like Garrett Bradbury has done everything right in the early going. “He’s extremely impressive…we’re cooking right now with him out there,” Johnson said of Bradbury after Wednesday’s practice. There’s plenty of time for things to change, but as of now, it feels like Bradbury has a good shot at winning that battle. The same can probably be said for Braxton Jones, who has now taken all of the first-team reps at left tackle in each of the last three practices after more of a rotation between Jones, Jedrick Wills Jr., and Kiran Amegadjie last week. Bears OC Pres Taylor was asked about the snap share at left tackle on Wednesday, and said it’s still very much a competition, but one that Jones has impressed in thus far: “We’re going to give everybody an opportunity at that left tackle spot,” Taylor said. “And we’ll see who ends up taking the bull by the horns there. But I think Braxton has done what we’ve expected in terms of being physical, being in great communication with our left guards as well, being in communication with the tight ends.” Like Bradbury in the middle of the offensive line, the left tackle job was probably more Jones’ to lose than a true competition from the onset, even if that’s not in the messaging from the coaching staff.
