How Is Vic Fangio Preparing the Eagles Defense Ahead of Monday Night Football?

Football nerds will geek out over the upcoming matchup between Ben Johnson and Vic Fangio. The battle between Chicago’s offensive play-caller and the Eagles’ defensive wizard is the kind of head-to-head coaching matchup you love to see. Unfortunately, the Bears will be without their starting quarterback when Monday Night Football kicks off. They might be down their backup, too. But even if Caleb Williams and Tyson Bagent are out, the challenges ahead don’t disappear.

And Fangio knows it.

When asked about the Bears’ quarterback situation, Eagles Defensive Coordinator Vic Fangio said he didn’t have enough information yet to prepare his defense for a backup or third-string quarterback.

“We’re preparing for Chicago’s offense,” Fangio said. “I don’t think their offense will change a whole lot schematically, so that’s what we’ll prepare for.”

Vic Fangio vs. the Bears Offense Is a Marquee Matchup

When discussing Caleb Williams’s potential absence and its impact on the run game, Vic Fangio’s answer threw me for a loop.

“Not as much as you think, Fangio said. “They’re an under-center offense a good bit, so it’s not like it’s a lot of gun zone-read, QB-generated runs. They’re under center, handing it off. They do a great job blocking.”

To be clear, I don’t think Fangio is diminishing Williams’ contributions to the ground game. But I did not expect Fangio to come off as dismissive. Williams’ threat as a scrambler and knack for creating big plays gives the offense an extra wrinkle that is tough to prepare for ahead of the game. Plus, Williams’ ability to throw on the run is something opposing defenses can’t ignore. That said, Vic Fangio is probably right to think that the Bears offense won’t change much. Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson is the type to stick to his principles no matter who is under center.

CHICAGO BEARS INJURY REPORT — WEEK 3 VS. EAGLES

That said, I’d like some good news from the Bears injury report in the coming days. On Thursday, running back Kyle Monangai was listed as a DNP on the estimated injury report. The Bears didn’t practice on Thursday. But if they had, Monangai would have sat out with a knee injury. It needs to be all hands on deck for as long as QB1 is on the sidelines. Hopefully, we’ll get some good news on Friday or Saturday.
