Athletes and visitors who plan on spending lots of time at the beach for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics might be comforted to know measures are already being taken to monitor shark activity.
Scientists at California State University Long Beach are in the process of making a solar-powered robot that can detect shark activity on local beaches, according to reports.
The vessel would scan for sharks on coastal waters, collect waters samples and launch an aerial drone while providing real-time information to lifeguards.
The 10-foot long device could patrol beaches on its own for a week at a time. Open water swimming at the LA Olympics is planned for Long Beach, while surfing is going to be held further south in Orange County.
“We are going to have athletes swimming in Long Beach harbor, where we know there has been white sharks before,” said Shark Lab Director Chris Lowe to Outkick. “So having this device patrolling for lifeguards will help them better protect athletes.”
The technology is supposed to give lifeguards more information on whether current conditions should lead to a warning for swimmers or just simply clearing the water.
The Shark Lab said in an article that more work is needed to refine the product before the Olympics arrive, and there already is some uncertainty about funding.
Funding from the state that helped build the vessel is scheduled to expire this fall, which could reduce efforts made to monitor sharks.
According to the Associated Press, the odds of getting attacked by a shark are less likely than getting struck by lightning or being mauled by a bear. But there have been two fatal shark attacks in the past eight months worldwide.
In late December, open water swimmer Erica Fox died in a shark attack just south of Davenport Beach near Santa Cruz, California.
In January, a 56-year-old woman died in the Virgin Islands after being the victim of a shark attack.
