ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Rochester chapter of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library celebrated a significant milestone in early childhood literacy Tuesday by handing out its 100,000th book.
“Well I get to say – Congratulations – you get the 100,000th book in Rochester… well done,” an official said.
Sen. Jeremy Cooney and Dr. Matt Present, founder of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library of Rochester, delivered the program’s 100,000th free book to a pre-schooler at Flower City School No. 54.
Cooney said the Imagination Library program is an opportunity to improve literacy rates in the community and across New York state.
“Unfortunately. in Monroe County, less than 40 percent (are) proficient in reading — as Dolly says, ‘it’s enough to drive you crazy if you let it,’ but we’re not going to let it,” Cooney said.
To increase access to books for children, Cooney announced that $1 million has been secured in this year’s state budget to fund the program statewide. Additionally, a $49,000 grant will go to the Rochester chapter of the Imagination Library program.
