Mercer Island Captures Fourth Straight Washington 3A State Title

Once again, Mercer Island showed no mercy at the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Girls 3A State Championships.

    Mercer Island won its fourth straight state championship, finishing 123 points better than runner-up Lakeside.

    Mercer Island was paced by a pair of seniors committed to Power 4 college programs, Clare Watson and Gracyn Kehoe.

    Committed to Stanford, Watson won the 100 fly in a personal best time of 51.75, improving on a 2nd-place result in the event last year. The time was a meet and state record. Watson then won the 100 back in a time of 53.42, improving on a 3rd-place finish in 2024.

    Watson was also a part of two winning relay teams, first swimming leadoff (25.09 split) for Mercer Island’s team in the 200 medley relay that won in a time of 1:42.68. The other team members were Klara Kirschbaum (28.53), Emma Nowakowski, (25.23) and Hope Edge (23.83).

    In the 400 free relay, Watson swam the third leg (49.94) for a team that won in 3:24.04. The other team members were Tatum Enge (51.69), Meg Dahlia (51.78) and Kehoe (50.63).

    Headed to Duke, Kehoe won the 200 free in a personal best time of 1:47.86 and the 100 free in 50.30.

    Other individual winners were:

    Lakeside senior Brisa Gao, a Columbia commit, won the 200 IM in a personal best time of 2:01.07. Enge, a sophomore, swam a personal best time of 23.04 to take the 50 free. Gig Harbor freshman Jane Jackman won the 1-meter diving event, topping the field with a score of 345.05. Bellevue senior Sofia Wyzga, a UC-San Diego commit, won the 500 free in 4:55.27 to repeat as champion. Kirschbaum, a freshman, swam a personal best time of 1:;03.03 to win the 100 breast.
