The New Orleans Pelicans are making a change at head coach.
After starting the season 2-10 as one of the NBA’s worst teams, the organization announced on Saturday morning that it had fired Willie Green. The decision comes months after the franchise moved on from David Griffin in the offseason and named Joe Dumars as the Pelicans’ new head of basketball operations.
Dumars initially chose to keep Green as the man in charge, but has now promptly switched things up less than a month into the season.

A former well-respected assistant with the Finals-bound Phoenix Suns, Willie Green joined New Orleans ahead of the 2021-22 season. After finishing with a 36-46 record in Year 1, Green proceeded to lead the Pelicans to back-to-back winning seasons, which led to a Play-In Tournament in 2022-23 (42-40) and a first-round playoff berth in 2023-24 (49-33).
Nevertheless, the Pelicans were never able to look like true threats in the West despite having some big-name talent. A big reason for that was the persistent injury trouble for former No. 1 overall Zion Williamson, as well as former All-Star Brandon Ingram. Most recently, Green was also without guard Dejounte Murray. Green built up an overall record of 150-190 during his five seasons with the team.
James Borrego is now set to take over in the interim. An admired assistant around the league, he previously served as the head coach of the Charlotte Hornets from 2018-2022.
