This month on “Wonderful Water,” join 97.9 The Hill’s Andrew Stuckey for a conversation with Mary Tiger, community relations for OWASA, and Mel Gilles, sustainability projects analyst from Orange County, about at-home conservation, and how OWASA is working to make the process of saving water — and saving money — easier. From the annual Creek Week celebration to regular workshops and widely-available tools, conservation can be simpler than ever!
OWASA’s Climate Action Plan encompasses strategies to save water system-wide and plans to cut greenhouse emissions in half by 2030 but, according to Tiger and Gilles, the average OWASA customer uses over 30 gallons of water a day. This amount can be reduced by mindful usage, updating of fixtures, and more.
“Water stewardship is actually a really important part of the long-term sustainability of our community’s water system,” said Mary Tiger. “Our community has done such a great job at being stewards of the water that OWASA has been able to indefinitely delay some really expensive expansion of the infrastructure. So, that’s where it kind of comes full circle and actually helps on the bill and from the financial standpoint.
It’s always helpful for the community to be prepared for drought. So we’ve had a few great years of full reservoirs, but we know that’s not always gonna be the case in the future. As we build OWASA’s climate adaptation plan, we’re thinking about how our communities’ water and sewer infrastructures and our resources could be impacted by climate. We’re looking forward to providing opportunities to anyone in our community who wants to conserve water and energy and support them and helping to achieve community wide goals. In the long run, it’s gonna be what’s best for our community, both ecologically and economically.”
