Neil Perry, one-third of the Grammy-winning trio of siblings known as The Band Perry, just dropped a bomb. More than two years after he departed from the band, Neil took to social media to pull back the curtain on the family drama he says led to his exit and set the record straight.
Taking to Instagram, the backup singer and mandolinist says that he was “terminated” from The Band Perry in June 2024, following a dispute over his sister, Kimberly Perry, wanting to spruce up the lineup with her husband, Johnny Costello.

View this post on Instagram“June 2024 took something from me,” he writes in the caption of a carousel post that opens with a scene from Succession that sets the stage for his account of the family’s unraveling. “Something I had spent my entire life building. A band. A business. A family. A name. My sister wanted her husband to become a member of the band, taking my brother’s place. I made it equally clear that I was not okay with that.”
The caption continues, explaining that Neil had witnessed “instability and broken trust” that fundamentally changed his ability to move forward as part of the band.
“Weeks later, I was terminated. The day after my birthday,” he writes. “I never expected that my decision not to participate under those circumstances would also mean losing my financial interest and access to the band’s platforms, resources, and audience I had spent my life helping build.”
Following his departure, Neil founded WOLVESofJUNE, his solo musical project whose title references the upheaval and transition that marked the end of his career with his siblings.
“I watched a story emerge that didn’t resemble the one I lived,” he writes to end the caption. “The anger became music. The grief became songs. The loss became freedom. June 2024 took the old life. @wolvesofjune is what came next. #thebandperry”
That post is actually one of just three on Neil’s Instagram page. The two others offer more of his perspective on his departure. One is a carousel of text further explaining his side of the story, and the other is a cheeky reel showing him take a seat in front of the camera, looking almost like he’s about to deliver his testimony in a prestige documentary about a family empire gone wrong.
First formed in Greeneville, Tennessee, in 2005, The Band Perry was a force in country music. Made up of lead singer Kimberly Perry, backup vocalist and bassist Reid Perry, and, of course, Neil, the country/pop trio rose to fame with multi-platinum crossover hits and won major Grammy and CMA Awards before reinventing their sound in the mid-2010s.
According to MusicRow, the siblings were discovered by Garth Brooks’ longtime manager, Bob Doyle, and later signed with Republic Nashville in August 2009. In 2010, they released their self-titled debut album, fueled by their mega-hit, “If I Die Young,” which topped the country chart, and “All Your Life,” which went on to become their second No. 1 country single.
Their follow-up, Pioneer, arrived in 2013. Debuting at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart, it produced two chart-topping country hits: "Better Dig Two" and “Done.” Two years later, the trio won a Grammy for Best Country Duo/Group Performance for their cover of Glen Campbell’s “Gentle on My Mind,” which is featured in the documentary Glen Campbell: I'll Be Me.
Around that time, however, The Band Perry went in another direction entirely. Parting ways with major labels, they shifted their sound to more pop and alternative tones, focusing on independent projects, like their 2018 EP, Coordinates.
The shift was followed by a “creative break,” with Kimberly, Reid, and Neil all announcing they would be pursuing individual projects, perUs Weekly. When the group returned in 2025, however, Neil was no longer with the lineup; Kimberly’s husband had replaced him.
As for Reid, he remained with the band for several months before announcing in October 2025 that he was leaving to pursue a career in artist management, per People. That left Kimberly as the band's only original member.
Now, 21 years after forming, Neil is speaking out about his account of what happened behind the scenes. But as the picture becomes clearer, the drama is getting messier.
