No apology but Pakistan’s Sana Mir issues clarification on her ‘Azad Kashmir’ remark at World Cup

The ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 had it’s first big controversy after former Pakistan captain and commentator Sana Mir made a reference to “Azad Kashmir” while describing batter Natalia Pervaiz. The comment, made during the Pakistan vs Bangladesh group-stage clash in Colombo, quickly drew criticism online, particularly from Indian fans who accused her of politicising cricket.

This controversy came at a delicate time, with tensions still simmering after the men’s Asia Cup final where India and Pakistan clashed both on and off the field. Against that backdrop, Mir’s words became an instant talking point, and within hours, a video of her commentary went viral on social media. There have been calls by the fans for authorities to take action against her for politicising cricket, with some even tagging the ICC and BCCI for intervention.

Clarification, not an apology from Sana Mir

In response, Sana Mir took to X (formerly Twitter) with a detailed clarification. She stressed that her intention had been misunderstood and that her remark was not meant to cause offence. “It’s unfortunate how things are being blown out of proportion and people in sports are being subjected to unnecessary pressure,” she wrote. “It is sad that this requires an explanation at the public level.”

Mir explained that she had mentioned “Azad Kashmir” because her research sources listed Natalia Pervaiz’s birthplace in those terms. She even attached a screenshot from ESPN, which initially displayed the player’s origin as “Azad Jammu and Kashmir”, later updated to “Pakistan-administered Kashmir”. According to Mir, she was simply citing available information, not making a political statement.

“It is part of the storytelling we do as commentators as to where the players come from. I did that today for two other players coming from other regions, too. Please don’t politicise it. As a commentator on the World Feed, we are meant to focus on the sport, teams, and players, highlighting inspiring stories of grit and perseverance.“
