2025 SOUTH AFRICAN SC CHAMPIONSHIPS

Thursday, September 25th – Sunday, September 28th Prelims at 8:30am local (2:30am ET)/Finals at 5:00pm (11am ET) GC Jolliffe Swimming Pool, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa SCM (25m) SwimSwam Preview Psych Sheet Day 1 Recap/Day 2 Recap/Day 3 Recap Results: Meet Mobile – Bombela SASC Swimming Champs (25m) PMBF 25

22-year-old Lara van Niekerk ended her 2025 South African Short Course Championships on a high note, reaping gold in the women’s 200m breast event.

Van Niekerk stopped the clock at 2:24.81 to hold off a pair of teenagers.

16-year-old TUKS swimmer Chanel Veldsman earned silver in 2:25.89 as 19-year-old Morgan Cope bagged bronze in 2:26.87.

Van Niekerk remains South Africa’s #7 SCM 200 breaststroke performer in history, with her PB of 2:22.75 still on the books from the 2022 edition of these championships.

Post-race, van Niekerk told The South African Swimming Federation, “I enjoy the 25-metre short course 200 because it’s all about pull downs and you can keep up your speed, so I actually did really enjoy that race – don’t tell my coach.

“The last 50, I did really have to dig deep. But I think just the fact that I could keep going and keep my tempo up is a really positive thing for me, it just shows my fitness is back where it should be. Now it’s just the little technical things that we just need to sharpen up.

Speaking about her performances in general in terms of regaining confidence, Van Niekerk added: “This has only been positive. There’s not one race I’m upset about, so that’s a very good thing. I have some videos, I’m going to go and look back at them and just see exactly what I can work on, but I think overall the stroke is where it should be, it’s more about just getting the speed up again, fitness is there, so it’s looking good.”

    Additional Notes

Oliva Lange got it done for gold in the men’s edition of the 200m breast, hitting a result of 2:12.11. That held off Shaun Thomas who touched a hair behind in 2:12.35, followed by Dylan Botha who rounded out the podium in 2:13.31. Dune Coetzee captured the win in the women’s 200m fly event in a time of 2:14.16, adding goldd to her previous victories in the 200m and 400m free races.“This morning I quite literally felt awful, and I think that’s just because I raced the 400 free very late last night, so I think that was still in me,” she said. “I was a little bit nervous going into this race because I know that Abi’s been crazy fast this meet, but at the same time, I was very excited because it’s always nice to have some competition and I love racing, I’ve always been a racer.”
