It’s natural that just every number two exec in a big organization is going to get some mention here and there when openings arise at the top of other shops in MLB. Still, it’s worth pointing out when the Cubs’ GM is mentioned twice in that way.
Earlier this week, now that we’re fully into front office hiring season, Carter Hawkins came up on a list of potential front office targets around baseball. Now, over in an anonymous survey at Yahoo, his name comes up again:
“Yahoo Sports spoke to 24 MLB executives over the past three weeks and asked them this question: If you were an owner with an opening and putting together a short list of candidates to be your next front-office head, whom would you call?
Executives were asked to pick three candidates, excluding members of their current organization or another team’s current top executive (i.e. we’re not stealing Andrew Friedman from the Dodgers). They were granted anonymity in order to speak freely.”
Three of the 24 surveyed executives mentioned Cubs GM Carter Hawkins as a possible candidate in this thought experiment. Only Jon Daniels (Senior Advisor, TB), Brandon Gomes (General Manager, LAD), Mike Chernoff (General Manager, CLE), Ben Sestanovich (Assistant General Manager, ATL), Matt Forman (Assistant General Manager, CLE), James Click (VP Strategy, TOR), and Carlos Rodriguez (Assistant General Manager, CWS) were mentioned more frequently out of the 40 names mentioned. Chicago Cubs AGM Jared Banner also got a mention.

Brought in by Jed Hoyer in October of 2021, in large part to help revamp the scouting and player development side of operations, we have certainly seen some steps forward on that side since Hawkins’ arrival (consider how much big league impact the Cubs have gotten from promoted minor leaguers and trades). Still, I feel like I’d want to see more happening with the farm system and with the internally-created pitching before I could proclaim Hawkins a guy I’m terrified of the Cubs losing. Which isn’t to say thing have gone badly in his time, or that Hawkins (or Hoyer) deserves all the credit or the blame. It’s hard to apportion that stuff from outside anyway.
Instead, my point is that this is a situation where, if the interviews are out there to be had, Carter Hawkins should of course take them. If he gets a shot to run his own baseball department, you can’t begrudge anyone taking that rare chance. I’m not sure the track record is yet there to justify it, but, as I said, it’s hard to tell from the outside.
