Toto Wolff has revealed that Mercedes is already deep into its 2027 Formula 1 project, with resources being directed towards next year’s car well before the sport’s summer break.
The move underlines just how dramatically the team’s fortunes have changed. After years of wrestling with the ground-effect regulations, Mercedes has hit the sweet spot with its 2026 challenger and built a formidable 145-point lead in the Constructors’ championship.
While Ferrari and McLaren continue to throw upgrades at their current cars, Mercedes has already begun shifting its attention towards what comes next.
“2027 started a while ago, before the summer,” Wolff said after Kimi Antonelli won the first Spanish Grand Prix last weekend at the Madring.
“We’ve switched resources into next year and that continues as per the plan independent of where we're standing in the championship.”
There is little ambiguity in Wolff’s message: Mercedes is not waiting for the 2026 title to be settled before getting serious about 2027.
The next car is already consuming engineering resources at Brackley, with the team exploiting its current competitive advantage to get a jump on the next phase of Formula 1’s technical arms race.
Mercedes is playing the long game
The timing is particularly striking given where Mercedes found itself only a year ago.
The Silver Arrows endured a frustrating start to the ground-effect era after their previous dominance came to an abrupt end. Their radical zero-pod concept failed to produce the expected gains, forcing the team to rethink its technical direction while rivals moved ahead.
The arrival of the 2026 regulations has changed the picture completely. Mercedes has won 10 of the first 14 Grands Prix and leads both championships, with Antonelli establishing himself at the head of the drivers’ standings.
That performance has created something more valuable than simply a trophy haul: development freedom.

Mercedes does not need to maintain the same upgrade tempo as its rivals to remain firmly in contention this season, allowing more of its technical machinery to be deployed on the next-generation car.
Yet Wolff is refusing to treat the championship lead as a licence to switch off in 2026.
“You can DNF, you can crash out. It happens two times in a row and then suddenly what looked like a nice buffer is not anymore because you have six races to go,” he said.

That caution is understandable. A 145-point lead may look imposing, but Wolff knows how quickly a championship picture can change in Formula 1.
And while the engineers are already thinking about 2027, the race team still has unfinished business.
One more push for 2026
To be clear, Mercedes has not abandoned its current car. A substantial upgrade package is scheduled to arrive in Malaysia, although Wolff acknowledges that translating development work into genuine track performance is never guaranteed.
“I think we are bringing a solid upgrade in Malaysia,” he told Sky Sports on Saturday. “So, we got to survive another one in Baku and let's see, but sometimes it doesn't correlate with the road so well.
“So, I hope that it does and hopefully that puts us on par with the others in terms of upgrades but we never know.”
The message from Brackley is therefore a fascinating one.
Mercedes is still pushing to maximise its 2026 advantage, but a significant part of its technical operation has already moved beyond the current championship.
After years spent trying to catch up, the Silver Arrows have suddenly found themselves in the rather enviable position of working on the next car while the current one is still winning races.
And with 2027 already under construction, Mercedes is clearly not waiting for its rivals to catch up before preparing for the next fight.
