Caleb Williams and Ben Johnson Sound Off on Their Relationship Going into Week 1

Finally, game week is upon us. And as will be the case throughout the year, Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams and Head Coach Ben Johnson met with the media on Wednesday. During their press briefings, the quarterback and head coach discussed a variety of topics. But the common thread that tied the separate press conferences together was how each talked about the relationship with the other. This is fascinating stuff to see a quarterback and head coach grow together, especially after witnessing how disjointed things were last season.

Bears quarterback Caleb Williams was asked to put into context how much he has learned from his new head coach. It would have been easy to churn out a cookie-cutter answer, but I feel as if QB1’s response did well to shed light on how he is connecting with Ben Johnson:

“I think my knowledge of football and NFL football has grown. Even just sitting in some of the meetings this year, and even today, going through our first game week, and just understanding things that I may not have understood last year. Whether it’s defenses, whether it’s offense, whether it’s just scheme — offense or defense — I think I’ve taken a step in that. I’ve gotta keep taking those steps this year and many years from now. I think Ben has been great for me. He’s pushed me, but he is a teacher and he’ll be persistent until you get it.”

My main takeaway from the quote above is the reminder of how much the previous regime did not do to prepare Caleb Williams for his rookie season. Williams might have been the recipient of a crash course on life in the NFL. But now, it seems like he is learning what life in the league is truly all about. This feels like one of those “you don’t know until you know” situations. I feel better about Ben Johnson being the guy stewarding Williams through his second season when things were going off the rails. All in all, it sounds like Chicago’s starting quarterback is receptive to these teaching styles. I hope it pays off in the end.

It still grinds my mind to think about how that coaching staff had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to coach up an elite quarterback prospect and tripped over its own feet when presented with the moment. I’d bet that Williams had to unlearn so many things under a head coach whose system is geared toward developing quarterbacks after spending a year with a staff that treated the most important position in the game as a caretaker.

During his press conference, Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson was asked about working with and teaching Caleb Williams and answered with an anecdote that peeled back the curtain and provided a peek at their dynamic as head coach and quarterback:

“He’s so young. There is a lot he is learning, but he is a sponge right now. He was up in my office a couple of days ago. We watched a couple of games together, and he’s just, the entire time, anything I would say, I see him jotting it down in his notebook. That’s an encouraging thing right now with where we’re at. We’re going to grow together. This offense is going to grow with him. There will be some bumpy steps along the way, but that’s OK. That’s the nature of doing it. I feel really good about where he’s at right now, and there’s no reason we can’t win this year.”

There are two things I loved hearing from Ben Johnson. Firstly, that Caleb Williams is a “sponge” in meetings with the coach. This is what was expected to happen when this team hired an offensive-minded head coach. And secondly, that Johnson comes off feeling so good about where his quarterback is right now that he feels there is no reason to believe that this team can’t win. To be clear, I don’t think he is talking about the Super Bowl. But these Bears are set up to be competitive this year. And if the quarterback is on the same page as his head coach, we’ll see some dubs in the win column. What a refreshing sight that would be.
