Hey, remember Billy Hamilton? Do you remember that he was briefly a Cub in 2020? 14 whole games!
Well he’s back, per the Cubs transaction log. The signing was official on August 31, which is notable in his case, because that means he is eligible for the Cubs’ playoff roster if they decide they want his speed on the bench.
Hamilton, now 34, played the last couple seasons in Mexico, where he did his thing as a super fast outfielder who pretty much can’t hit. The Cubs would desperately try to make sure he never actually took a plate appearance. (Too many haunting memories of Terrance Gore swinging up there WHEN ALL HE HAD TO DO WAS NOT SWING.)
This is fun. I’m not sure what Hamilton still has in the tank – is it still true game-changing speed? – but we’ll see what happens as the month plays out.
