Very Big Fun With Very Big Owen Caissie’s Very Big Day ...Middle East

You never know how or when a young player is going to give your team a spark. That’s why, one might argue, if you bring up a scorching hot young player like Owen Caissie from Triple-A, it’s probably worth giving him some starts while resting a deeply, badly struggling veteran or two in the process.

It took Craig Counsell and the Cubs a few days longer than I would’ve liked, but, in tandem with giving Kyle Tucker some time to reset after the deepest funk of his career, Caissie finally got a little room to run.

With it, he had himself a huge day for the Cubs in their double-header sweep of the Brewers. The highlights are aplenty:

We’ll see what the Cubs opt to do from here with respect to Owen Caissie and the outfield group. I understand that there are four “starting” outfielders ahead of Caissie, and you generally want to go with your best group on any given day – the projections will say that’s far more likely to be Tucker, Pete Crow-Armstrong, Ian Happ, and Seiya Suzuki than any combination that doesn’t include those four. It’s just that it was so easy to see the life and lift the Cubs seemed to get from Caissie WHEN he did impactful things. Maybe you can’t predict and project hits or homers or great catches, but you can at least know that WHEN those things happen involving Caissie, it might provide just a little extra bounce in steps of everyone around him. That has value, doesn’t it?

That is all to say, outside of miserable match-ups, I’d like to see Caissie starting in most games for at least the next few days. Maybe Tucker gets one more day off. Maybe each of the other three gets a rest at some point, and you coordinate who plays where on that basis.
