Wildfire burning near Moffat County coal mine 100% contained

The nearly 600-acre wildfire that sparked Friday near a Moffat County coal mine was 100% contained Saturday night, according to sheriff’s officials.

Fire crews continued to monitor the burn area overnight for hot spots, according to a news release from the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office.

    The fire started near Colowyo Mine off of Colorado 13 and burned roughly 585 acres between 2:30 p.m. Friday and 7:45 p.m. Saturday, sheriff’s officials said. That’s larger than 440 football fields.

    It also shut down the state highway for hours on Friday between Meeker and Craig.

    The cause of the fire remains unknown.
