Rockies Recap: Outfield candidates Nolan Jones, Sean Bouchard, Zac Veen heat up

Rockies 13, Padres 2

Wednesday at Salt River Fields

On the mound: The Rockies received strong pitching, albeit vs. a Padres’ travel squad. Right-hander Bradley Blalock, 24, in the running to be a long reliever or possibly a starter, pitched two scoreless innings, reducing his ERA to 1.74. He allowed three hits, struck out three and walked one. … Righty Jake Woodford, 28, got the start and allowed one run over two innings on two hits. He struck out one. He has a 6.75 ERA. … Right-hander Zach Agnos, 24, could be forcing his way into the major-league bullpen. He has a 4.32 ERA after pitching two scoreless innings, allowing one hit, one walk and fanning three.

At the plate: Nolan Jones, who’s penciled in as the starting left fielder, finally broke out with a big day, hitting 4 for 4 (including a double) with three RBIs, raising his average to .250. … Sean Bouchard and No. 3 prospect Zac Veen are battling it out for a roster spot. Both impressed against the Padres. Bouchard hit 3 for 4 with a double, home run and three RBIs.  He’s batting .379. Veen, hitting .313, bashed a three-run triple in the eighth. … Designated hitter Kris Bryant’s lackluster spring continued. Bryant went 0 for 4 with two strikeouts and is batting .143.

Roster moves: Three of the Rockies’ most-promising prospects are no longer in major-league camp. Infielder Adael Amador and catcher Drew Romo were optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque. Infielder Kyle Karros was reassigned to minor league camp.

Colorado has 41 players remaining in major league camp, including 10 non-roster invitees.
