A Michigan Goal! More Frustration, Trade Board Updates, Scouting Lardis, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

The Blackhawks lost another game in which they were overwhelmed last night. According to Natural Stat Trick, the shot attempts finished 93-39 in favor of Utah. Total scoring chances were 52-16; scoring chances at 5-on-5 were 40-5. And yet, the final score was only 2-1. At some point we need to give the goaltender some props. Because last night’s game should have been a much more one-sided final.

Seth Jones wasn’t having it last night. He let us know exactly how he felt after the game.

    — Bleacher Nation Blackhawks (@bn-blackhawks.bsky.social) February 25, 2025 at 11:46 PM I saw enough from Ethan Del Mastro and Nolan Allan last night that they should stay in the lineup the rest of the way. Both of them. Darren Pang noted on the broadcast that there were 18(!) pro scouts at the game. He said there were two each from the Dallas Stars and Tampa Bay Lighting. Write that down… Chris Johnston at The Athletic updated his new Trade Deadline Big Board on Tuesday morning. He has 43 players ranked now, and three Blackhawks make an appearance: Jones at No. 3, Ryan Donato at No. 5 and Connor Murphy at No. 23. On Jones, he writes: “Chicago is believed to be open to retaining some of the remaining money to help facilitate a trade.” I will once again note that the Blackhawks moving both Jones and Murphy doesn’t seem likely before the draft, if not next year’s deadline — especially in the case of Murphy — because of the lack of right-handed defensemen ready for the NHL roster in Chicago. Here’s part of what he wrote about Donato, who I think some of us have forgotten is still a hot name out there:

A relentless high-motor player who is enjoying a career season in Chicago, Donato is attracting serious attention on the trade market. As a pending unrestricted free agent, he profiles as a rental who can add to a team’s depth while playing basically anywhere in the lineup.

Scott Powers unloaded some miscellaneous items in a 10 Thoughts column on Tuesday. The portion that really got my attention was his discussions with a couple analysts about Nick Lardis‘ record-setting season in the OHL and some of the why he isn’t getting more love from the macro hockey community. A big part of his projections not necessarily being as kind as Blackhawks fans would want is his size. Yes, one inch can make a huge difference. Their models have him listed at 5-10, which changes his comparison set; he’s listed at 5-11 by Brantford. Byron Bader brings up Senators forward Ridley Greig (5-10) and Rangers center Vincent Trocheck (5-11) as some guys who line up favorably in his data. Here’s some of what Jack Han had to say:

“I like his game,” Han said. “Got some Andrew Mangiapane to him. To make the NHL, he’ll have to continue to be really good at winning loose pucks and attacking inside, despite his build. We’ll know once he hits the AHL. Michael Bunting is another guy he reminds me of. Two very useful players but also who, one, have/had relatively brief peaks as top sixers in the NHL and, two, had to fight every step of the way to establish themselves.”

    — Scott Powers (@ByScottPowers) February 25, 2025 On Tuesday morning we got an update on the voting for this year’s Hobey Baker Memorial Trophy. Blackhawks prospect Ryan Greene is running a strong second right now. But where are the votes for Sam Rinzel, Sacha Boisvert, Dominic James and Aidan Thompson? Let’s go, Blackhawks fans! Vote here.

    — Hobey Baker Award (@HobeyBakerAward) February 25, 2025 Greene picked up an assist for Boston University against UConn last night. Jack Pridham scored his 21st goal of the season early in the third period to extend Kitchener’s lead.
