Mike Williams Former NFL receiver dies at 36

Former NFL wide receiver Mike Williams died Tuesday morning after he was taken off life support at a Tampa, Florida, hospital following a construction accident, his agent Hadley Engelhard told CNN. Williams was 36.

Williams was performing electrical work when he was severely injured and required hospitalization, according to Engelhard.

“He will be missed. He fought hard his whole life. Prayers to his family,” Engelhard said.

Williams was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the fourth round of the 2010 NFL Draft out of Syracuse University. The Buffalo, New York native was voted second for the Associated Press Offensive Rookie of the Year after catching 65 passes for 964 yards and 11 touchdowns. He started all 16 games for the Buccaneers.

He burst onto the scene in 2010 as a fourth-round pick with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, catching 65 passes for 964 yards and 11 touchdowns. His touchdown-reception total set the single-season club mark at the time for any player, and he wound up second in Offensive Rookie of the Year voting.

"We are saddened to hear of the untimely death of Mike Williams, which has left our organization, his former teammates and fans with heavy hearts," the Buccaneers said in a statement. "We send our deepest sympathies to his family and loved ones as they mourn this tragedy."

Williams was doing electrical work last month when someone dropped a steel beam on his head, Rosenthal told WIVB. He initially walked away from the accident, but he complained about headaches, and his symptoms worsened.

Williams exploded onto the scene in 2010, finishing second in Associated Press Offensive Rookie of the Year voting to then-St. Louis Rams quarterback Sam Bradford. The wideout started in all 16 games that season and hauled in 11 touchdowns and 964 receiving yards on 65 receptions. He had another big season in 2012, turning in nine TDs and 996 yards.

Williams' 2013 season was curtailed by injuries and he was later traded by the Buccaneers to the Bills.

He played his final season with the Bills and later was briefly with the Kansas City Chiefs organization.

After his time at Syracuse, the Buccaneers selected Williams in the fourth round of the NFL draft in 2010. When injuries sidelined him at Tampa, he was traded in 2014 to the Buffalo Bills, with whom he ended his NFL career.
