A suburban community paid tribute on Wednesday to a North Central College cheerleader killed in a mass shooting downstate over Halloween weekend.
Police said 19-year-old Giana Dettloff was killed during a Halloween party over the weekend in Bloomington. 8 others were wounded.
Dettloff’s friends and former classmates gathered at Glenbard North High School to tie ribbons around the school to honor her memory on Wednesday. Dettloff graduated from Glenbard North High School back in May.
Those who knew the college freshman said she had a contagious sense of joy, laughter, and energy. She loved cheerleading and served as a junior cheer coach.
The Mayor of Carol Stream told NBC Chicago he knows the Dettloff’s family and said the community is there to support them.
“This is what community is all about, the family is phenomenal, this young lady not only went through the high school but come back and help younger kids with the cheer,” said Mayor Frank Saverino. “She’s a phenomenal, the family, I’m at a loss for words.”
Family, friends, and classmates are preparing to say their final goodbyes at a public visitation at the school Thursday night from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
“It’s going to be very tough for everyone involved to say goodbye to Giana, she didn’t deserve this and here we are,” said Debbie Saverino, a family friend. “Tomorrow is not promised, you gotta hug your kids extra hard.”
Bloomington police said detectives are still following up on leads and couldn’t comment when asked whether a person of interest has been identified.
