Motherhood has been a life-changing experience for Hailey Bieber, but not every part of her journey has been easy.
The Rhode founder recently opened up about dealing with premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) after welcoming her son, Jack Blues, with her husband Justin Bieber, in August 2024.
In an interview with Women’s Wear Daily, the 29-year-old discussed how becoming a mother sparked a deeper interest in women’s health, particularly the conditions that don’t always receive enough attention, like the physical and emotional changes women experience before, during, and after childbirth.

There’s so much that happens when you are pregnant, during childbirth. There’s so many things that happen leading up to having a child.”
“After I had my son, I struggled with that a bit, and there’s just not a lot of conversation or research around it.”
But she admitted that being able to openly talk about it with others has helped her feel “less alone.” Sharing what she’s been feeling and struggling with has made her experience feel like “less of a lonely journey.”
View this post on InstagramPMDD is a more severe form of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) that can cause intense emotional and physical symptoms in the week or two leading up to menstruation. According to the Office on Women’s Health, symptoms can include severe mood swings, anxiety, depression, and irritability, often improving shortly after a person’s period begins.
Bieber previously discussed her diagnosis during a March appearance on the SHE MD podcast, revealing that she was diagnosed approximately six months after giving birth.
“I was like, ‘This just feels way more intense than before,’ like the lead-up to getting your period,” she said. “You’re like, ‘Why does it feel like my whole entire life is gonna end? Like, I don’t understand.’ You just have all these swirling thoughts and feelings, and just everything feels like the biggest deal in the world.”

Despite the challenges of motherhood, Bieber wouldn’t trade being Jack’s mom for the world. She once described her 2-year-old son as “joy personified.”
And while everyone’s experience with PMDD is different, Bieber’s willingness to speak about hers is another reminder of why these conversations matter. For someone else navigating similar symptoms, simply knowing they’re not alone can make all the difference.
