Election Night Tuesday saw Democrats win control of both chambers of Congress, delivering a decisive setback to Republicans and dramatically shifting the balance of power in Washington. The victories usher in a new period of congressional resistance to President Donald Trump and his administration
Midterm elections are typically difficult for the president’s party, but Republicans had originally expected that their Senate majority was safe. Instead, Democrats marched through some of the most conservative states in the nation, flipping seats in deep-red and major battleground states alike.
The blue wave continued in Illinois, with Democratic Gov. JB Pritzker winning a third term. Former Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton also defeated former Illinois Republican Party Chair Don Tracy for the U.S. Senate seat long held by retiring Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin.
Overall, Illinois will send six freshman members to Congress, all of whom are Democrats. Two members of Congress, U.S. Reps. Robin Kelly and Raja Krishnamoorthi, effectively vacated their Congressional seats when they launched their runs for Senate. Reps. Danny Davis, Jan Schakowsky and Jesús “Chuy” García all announced they would retire from the House, in addition to Durbin.
