Fans of the cult classic 1986 film Crossroads are in for a treat, as screenwriter John Fusco reveals a sequel installment is in the works decades after the original film.
Nothing ever really stays in the past, as recent years have proven that die-hard fans of ’80s hits are eager to see new storylines. Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, which was released last year, gave fans a taste of nostalgia that was incredibly welcome.
In an exclusive with Guitar World, Fusco reveals that Crossroads may be the next music film to get a sequel installment. Fusco has kept in touch over the years with leading actor and Karate Kid star Ralph Macchio, who has expressed interest in a new film.
“Ralph and I, we call… and he’s like, ‘Man, you know we should do some kind of anniversary thing,’” said the screenwriter. “And I said, ‘We should do the freaking sequel.’ He’s like, ‘No shit, really? Do you have an idea?’ I said, ‘Yeah, I have an idea for it.’ So Ralph and I have talked about it. We’ve got a plan.”
The 1986 musical drama film was inspired by legendary blues musician Robert Johnson. Fusco helmed the project alongside Walter Hill as its director, with Macchio starring alongside Joe Seneca and Jami Gertz. Crossroads was a success among critics, but not at the box office. Like many films of the era, it took some years before it became a cult classic among musicians.
Crossroads centers on 17-year-old Eugene Martone (Macchio), who is fascinated with blues while attending the Juilliard School as a classical guitarist. He soon stumbles upon Robert Johnson’s history with the blues genre and the rumors that he “sold his soul to the Devil at the crossroads.” On the hunt for Johnson’s mythical lost 30th song, he tracks down Willie Brown (Seneca) to help him find it.
The film’s ending left a lot to be explored with Macchio’s character, and he explained that a sequel “would be years and years later, less about Eugene Martone and more about someone relevant today. I can’t go into a deep dive on that stuff, but I haven’t given up on it.”
With Macchio on board, so is original cast member Steve Vai. He played the role of metal-blues guitar master Jack Butler, who becomes a sort of foe to Eugene in Crossroads. The three-time Grammy Award winner and famous rock guitarist to icons like Frank Zappa, Ozzy Osbourne, Alice Cooper, and more is eager to reprise his on-screen role.
“I know Ralph wants to kick my ass,” the guitarist commented. “Jack Butler needs his revenge!”
The project is still in its early stages, with fans having to wait for an official announcement that it’s been greenlit.
