Tuscaloosa City Council approves hemp, alcohol licenses at meeting ...Middle East

News by : (The Crimson White) -

The Tuscaloosa City Council rejected a proposed demolition and approved multiple alcohol licenses and contracts during its regular meeting Tuesday.

Council members voted against condemning a structure at 906 1/2 18th St. after city staff reported that the owner had completed exterior repairs. The property had been posted for condemnation on April 1, 2026, with 48 housing code violations documented.

Staff recommended against demolition because the owner addressed the exterior issues and was not present for the hearing.

“The property owner has made all the necessary repairs to the exterior and is not here to represent,” a city representative said. “So, the recommendation is to vote no on the demolition.”

The council agreed and the measure failed.

Members then approved a consent agenda and moved through public hearings. They set the cost of demolishing a structure at 2714 31st Ave. and authorized a lien, and also approved vacating a portion of 31st St. E.

Four alcohol-related applications passed after the Tuscaloosa Police Department reported no objections and applicants addressed the council.

Riverside Market Inc., doing business as Riverside Package Store at 401 Almond Ave., received approval to sell consumable hemp products. Jenny Crimson Corner on the 15th Street Chevron at 1819 Veterans Memorial Pkwy., gained an off-premises beer and table wine license.

Darala LLC, the owners of Calentano Mexican Grill at 6343 Interstate Dr. in Cottondale, received a restaurant retail liquor license. Downtown Entertainment LLC also secured special-event retail licenses for less than seven days covering seven November dates, including a “Dazed and Confused” event.

The council approved a series of resolutions and contracts, including work with Jim House and Associates, Cornerstone Civil Contractors, JNL Tree Service and others. It authorized disbursements from district improvement funds for the DCH Foundation, Bryant High School, Jeremiah’s Community Garden and Central Elementary and Central High schools.

Members also green-lighted a children’s toys for parking tickets program, a lease agreement with the Alabama Department of Transportation, a memorandum of understanding with LSU and an extension of the Northstar franchise.

The last item on the agenda was an amendment to the fiscal year 2027 general fund budget that passed, and bills were approved for payment.
