Canva is making some major changes to its internal structure, according to a major announcement from the company this week.
On Tuesday, Nov. 3, Canva co-founder and CEO Melanie Perkins informed the Canva team of the “incredibly hard decision” to make significant changes to the company’s organization structure, which will mean massive changes for many roles, including relocations and layoffs.
According to Perkins, the changes will impact a total of 1,271 people, which is 22% of the company’s employees.
Perkins, who called the news a “profoundly difficult” announcement to make, said in her note that Tuesday’s announcement has been the “hardest moment” in the company’s 13-year history. “Behind every decision is someone we care deeply about, and I know the consequences will be very real for those directly affected, their families, friends and teammates.”
She continued: “I’m deeply sorry for the pain and disruption this will cause for everyone affected. While nothing can make this news easier, we will do everything we possibly can to support everyone affected.”
Why Is Canva Making This Change?
According to Perkins, Canva will be making three major changes in order to “bring more of what has made Canva special back into how we work.” She lays out the three changes as follows:
1. “We’re simplifying how we come together to build Canva”Instead of operating in various teams, Canva will be bringing together its areas of Product, Growth and Platform into one Product Org. This is intended to “provide clearer ownership, greater autonomy and flexibility to tackle our most important goals.”
“We want to get back to spending more time building, and less time navigating how work gets done,” Perkins said.
2. “We’re reducing subspecialisation and collapsing layers to broaden ownership”Canva will be reducing its fragmented ownership across subspecialties and teams, and instead will incorporate “narrower subspecialties into broader roles so teams have more ownership of goals from start to finish.”
“We’re also simplifying layers, consolidating overlapping responsibilities, and ensuring teams have the right mix of skills and experience for the chapter ahead,” said Perkins.
3. “We’re co-locating closely connected teams and increasing in-person collaboration”While Canva will still operate globally, Sydney will become the primary home for more product teams at Canva.
“We know relocating is a big decision for those being asked to consider it, and we’re committed to making the process as smooth as possible with comprehensive support,” Perkins said.
Beginning in January 2027, the company will also be asking most hybrid employees to spent 2-3 in the office each week, depending on location.
How Is Canva Supporting Affected Employees?
In order to support the employees affected by the new changes at Canva, the company will be providing support by implementing the following measures:
Six months salary to each affected employee, including statutory entitlements, regardless of location. Removal of the one-year vesting cliff for those who joined in the past year. Twelve months of continued healthcare coverage (in countries where the company currently provides this). Twelve months of Canva Care, Canva’s Employee Assistance Program (with extended coverage to family members). Dedicated career support, including one-on-one coaching, interview preparation, and one year of LinkedIn Premium. An opt-in alumni talent directory. Everyone leaving will be able to keep their Canva MacBook. The company will also be launching the Canva Collective Fund, providing US$10,000 grants to departing Canvanauts who want to start something of their own.In a final message to those who will be leaving the company, Perkins wrote: “Please know these decisions do not diminish your talent, the value of your contributions, or the difference you’ve made here. We will do everything we can to support you in what comes next, and I hope the work we do from here will be worthy of what you’ve helped build.”
