Raised in Chapel Hill, Wyatt Easterling has enjoyed a decades-long career in music, including a 35-year stint as a songwriter in Nashville. He’s been back in the Triangle for a little more than a decade – and now he’s focused on making music for himself.

“I really liked the way it all came together,” he says of the new album – 10 tracks, recorded over two years in studios across multiple states with a wide range of backing artists. “I rather enjoyed (shaking) it up a little bit and having different musicians; it was quite an experience.”

“A Love For All Time” is just the latest highlight in Easterling’s tremendous career – a career that began right here in Chapel Hill, in a town whose own music scene was just beginning to emerge.

“We had a number of great musicians – Arrogance, Mike Cross – and I got to hang out and work with some of those guys,” he says of his early years. “Livingston Taylor was a mentor as I was growing up, and of course his brother James took the world by storm…

“I had a front row seat watching the Taylor clan, which always fascinated me – such an eccentric family,” he adds with a laugh. “I loved it. They were so much fun to be around.”

The new album is due out soon, but in the meantime Easterling’s returning to his bread and butter: songwriting, and mentoring the next generation of songwriters.

“I have this songwriting retreat that I host every year called Song Travelers,” he says of his fall plans. “We get together up in Northeast Maryland; next year we’ll be in Amsterdam…

“I have 15, 16 writers come in, we gather and stay at the same place, a chef comes in and feeds us…and a lot of these folks come back year after year, so I must be doing something right.”

Wyatt Easterling stopped by Live & Local – his first time on WCHL since his first-ever radio appearance back in 1980 – to discuss “A Love For All Time” and perform three songs: “Stumbling Towards the Light,” “Modern-Day Drifter” (an Easterling-penned song made famous by Dierks Bentley), and an as-yet-unreleased song, “Between Us.” Listen:
