ALBION, N.Y. — More people than expected turned out for a Día de los Muertos celebration at the Orleans County Fairgrounds, bringing Mexican culture and traditions to Albion.
The holiday means “Day of the Dead.”
The free GO ART! festival featured hands-on art activities, traditional foods and a live presentation from Mexico. Organizers said the celebration had been growing before COVID and is now on the rise again.
“It’s just the love and everything that’s coming from it, and that people are knowing more and more about it, and that it’s being celebrated. And here we are in Knowlesville, which is part of Albion, and there’s this many people coming, and when I pulled in here because I was budding around, getting sound equipment, doing everything, and I was like, ‘Oh my god, there’s so many cars here. This is so amazing,'” said Gregory Hallock, executive director of Go Art!, located in Batavia.
Volunteers said visitors were asking questions, taking pictures and enjoying the holiday.
