The Greatest TV Show You’ve Never Heard of Is Coming to Netflix on Nov. 1 ...Saudi Arabia

News by : (Parade) -

Netflix is about to give the greatest TV shows you’ve probably never heard of another chance to find an audience.

Rectify, the extraordinary SundanceTV drama that quietly amassed some of the most glowing reviews of the 2010s while remaining largely under the mainstream radar, is coming to Netflix on Nov. 1.

And calling Rectify one of television’s greatest overlooked dramas isn’t hyperbole.

The series earned near-perfect reviews, won a Peabody Award and repeatedly appeared on critics’ lists of the best shows on television during its four-season run. Its fourth and final season earned a staggering 99 out of 100 on Metacritic.

And yet, plenty of TV viewers have probably never heard of it.

That’s partly because Rectify originally aired from 2013 to 2016 on SundanceTV, where it became the network’s first original scripted series. Now, 10 years after the show’s finale, all four seasons are getting another shot at finding the audience critics have been arguing it deserved all along.

What Is ‘Rectify’ About?

Created by Ray McKinnon, Rectify begins when Daniel Holden, played by Aden Young, is released after spending 19 years on death row. Daniel was convicted as a teenager of the rape and murder of his girlfriend, but new DNA evidence contradicts the prosecution’s case, leading a court to vacate his conviction.

That isn’t the end of Daniel’s story. It’s the beginning.

He returns to his small Georgia hometown and a family that has spent nearly two decades living with the consequences of his conviction.

His sister Amantha, played by Abigail Spencer, has always believed in his innocence. His mother, played by a pre-Succession J. Smith-Cameron, must adjust to having her son home after almost 20 years. Meanwhile, the town around Daniel hasn’t necessarily decided that a vacated conviction means he’s innocent.

Rectify isn’t a conventional murder mystery or legal thriller. Instead, it asks what happens after a man loses nearly two decades of his life and suddenly has to figure out how to live again. The result is a deliberately paced Southern Gothic character drama about guilt, trauma, faith, family, justice and whether lost time can ever really be restored.

Critics Really Did Love ‘Rectify’ This Much

It’s difficult to overstate how enthusiastically TV critics embraced Rectify.

Its first season earned an 82 on Metacritic, but the reviews only got stronger from there. Season 2 scored 92, season 3 earned 89 and the fourth and final season received an extraordinary 99. On Rotten Tomatoes, the final two seasons both received 100 percent scores.

The critical praise went well beyond review aggregators.

In 2016, The Daily Beast’s Malcolm Jones made an astonishingly unequivocal declaration about the series: “Rectify is the best series I have ever seen on television. Not may be. Not might be. It just is.”

The Hollywood Reporter’s Daniel Fienberg ranked the final season as the second-best show of 2016 and predicted that viewers would eventually look back and wonder how Young never received a major award nomination for his performance as Daniel.

“Rectify is the only show to make my Top 10 each of the past four years and one of the best shows of this Peak TV Era,” Fienberg wrote at the time.

Entertainment Weekly ranked it as the second-best show on television in 2014. Flavorwire put it at No. 1 in 2016. Throughout its run, Rectify appeared on year-end lists from critics at outlets including Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, Vulture, TV Guide, The New York Times, Entertainment Weekly and more.

The series also won a Peabody Award in 2014.

‘Rectify’ Is Still Being Called One of TV’s Most Overlooked Shows

The praise didn’t disappear when Rectify ended.

In August 2026, TIME included the drama on its list of the most underappreciated television shows of the 21st century.

Critic Judy Berman praised creator McKinnon’s decision to resist turning the series into a conventional whodunit, instead allowing the story to unfold slowly while examining Daniel, his family and the moral complexities surrounding his release.

That recognition comes a full decade after Rectify aired its final season.

There’s an irony in that longevity: The series spent four seasons receiving the kind of reviews most shows can only dream about while remaining obscure enough that critics are still trying to convince people to watch it 10 years later.

Netflix may finally change that.

How Many Episodes of ‘Rectify’ Are There?

Here’s another reason to give Rectify a shot: This isn’t a 100-episode commitment. The entire series is just 30 episodes. You could watch it in a weekend. All four seasons of Rectify arrive on Netflix on Nov. 1.

Season 1 has six episodes, season 2 has 10, season 3 has six and the fourth and final season has eight. And unlike so many prematurely canceled critical favorites, Rectify got to finish its story.

The cast also includes Adelaide Clemens, Clayne Crawford, Luke Kirby, Bruce McKinnon, Sean Bridgers and J.D. Evermore, with Caitlin FitzGerald and Nathan Darrow joining in its final season.

For viewers discovering Daniel Holden for the first time, that’s 30 episodes of one of the most acclaimed dramas of all time.

For the critics who spent four years insisting more people should be watching it, Netflix’s enormous audience may finally give Rectify the second life they’ve been waiting for.
