In October 1951, the world was introduced to Lucy, Ricky, Fred and Ethel, the characters in I Love Lucy. The beloved foursome, played by Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz, William Frawley and Vivian Vance, entertained fans with their endearing antics for six seasons on the CBS sitcom, but off camera the dynamic was very different.
Frawley couldn’t stand his “honeybunch” Vance in real life, and the feeling was mutual.
In a piece posted by Woman’s World, Lucille Ball historian Geoffrey Mark Fidelman (The Lucy Book: A Complete Guide to Her Five Decades on Television), revealed that the co-stars’ feud started on the very first day on the set, when Vance, then 42, met her TV husband, 64.
“Day one of I Love Lucy, the first read-through, Bill is there early to prove he’s reliable,” Fidelman shared. “Vivian shows up and innocently greets Desi Arnaz. She didn’t recognize Bill Frawley because Vivian wasn’t really a film person; she was a Broadway and nightclub performer. She said to Desi, ‘Who’s the old coot?’ Desi said, ‘That’s the guy who’s going to play your husband.’ ‘Husband?! He could play my grandfather!’“
Frawley reportedly “heard this, instantly hated her and never forgave her.”
Vance seemingly never got over the perception that her character would be married to a guy who looked like Frawley, who was balding, overweight, and 22 years her senior, while Ball’s Lucy was married to Ricky, played by her real-life dashing husband Desi.
“It really bothered her,” said Gregg Oppenheimer, son of the late I Love Lucy head writer Jess Oppenheimer, in an interview with The Television Academy. “She told people, ‘How will anyone believe I’m married to that old man?’”
“Sure, [Frawley] was insulted,” Oppenheimer added. “But he spent most of his time in his dressing room, anyway, listening to the baseball game.”
Frawley once crudely called his TV wife Vance a “miserable c–t” when asked what she was really like, his My Three Sons co-star Tim Considine later told Page Six.
But Vance got in the final dig after she learned of Frawley’s death at age 79 while she was dining in a restaurant in March 1966. “Champagne, for everyone!” the I Love Lucy star reportedly said.
Despite their mutual dislike for one another, Frawley and Vance remained professional on the I Love Lucy set.
“You would never, ever know that they didn’t like each other,” Ball’s longtime personal secretary Wanda Clark once said in an interview with Voices of Oklahoma. “They were so professional and it just never showed. They could do their job no matter what they thought of each other.”
