Dan Rather is smiling brightly as he soaks up the love on his 95th birthday.
The iconic newsman, 95, who served as CBS Evening News anchor from 1981 to 2005, made a rare appearance on social media alongside two old friends as they celebrated Rather’s big day. Toting a key lime pie with “95” candles in it, the group had a bunch of balloons for the special occasion.
“Happy **95th** to American legend @thedanrather and a very special friend.He’s still asking tough questions, holding the powerful to account and seeking truth. His knowledge of American history is faster than a Google search, to this day.We kept our birthday celebration tradition with balloons and a key lime pie from @headlinersclubatx, a Rather favorite,” Rather’s friend Tony Plohetski shared.

There’s a New Documentary About Rather

Rather is a new documentary about the legendary newsman that’s now available for streaming on YouTube. The film, which features a variety of never-before-seen footage from his years at work, chronicles Rather’s tumultuous 2006 exit from CBS News, as well as his multi-decade career with the network. Available to watch for free, Rather opened up about how pleased he was about the decision to have the film streaming with no cost on YouTube.
“I hope it will give it a much wider audience,” he told Variety. “I’m also hoping that this documentary may, in some pretty small way, help underscore the importance of defending the First Amendment and freedom of the press — especially at this moment in our country’s history. I think rededicating ourselves to freedom of the press and the First Amendment is especially important.”
