In 1989, a Veteran Told a Heartbroken Homeless Man 1 Thing About Love—2 Years Later, It Inspired Bonnie Raitt’s Iconic Hit ...Saudi Arabia

A heartbreaking story about a homeless man facing the end of his marriage helped inspire one of Bonnie Raitt’s most memorable songs.

In 1989, The Tennessean published a story about a homeless man named Big John, who was drinking to cope with an impending divorce.

One Remark Helped Inspire a Song About Unrequited Love

As he struggled with the breakdown of his marriage, another homeless man, a Vietnam veteran, offered him a blunt piece of advice about love.

“You can’t make a damn woman love you, if she don’t,” the veteran reportedly told him.

The exchange caught the attention of Nashville songwriters Mike Reid and Allen Shamblin, who found inspiration in the remark. As MEL Magazine reported in its account of the song’s origins, the line helped spark the lyrics that would eventually become “I Can’t Make You Love Me.”

The songwriters later discussed the story in a 2016 oral history with Stereogum.

They remembered some details differently: Reid recalled a newspaper account involving a man who shot up a woman’s car, while Shamblin remembered a homeless man living under a bridge and going through a divorce. Both agreed that a local Nashville newspaper story had inspired the song.

Reid and Shamblin initially imagined the track as an upbeat bluegrass song. They came up with the central lines but struggled to develop the idea further. Eventually, Reid began playing around on a piano and found a melody that transformed the song into the heartbreaking ballad listeners know today.

Bonnie Raitt Recorded the Song 2 Years Later

The pair wanted Bonnie Raitt to record it. Reid sent her a demo, and she immediately connected with the song. Raitt later recorded it for her 1991 album Luck of the Draw, with Bruce Hornsby contributing the piano part and Don Was serving as co-producer.

Released as a single on October 22, 1991, “I Can’t Make You Love Me” became one of Raitt’s signature recordings.

Her official biography confirms that the album produced the hit, while the song’s emotional message has continued to resonate with listeners decades later.
