Mark-Paul Gosselaar Remembers Dennis Haskins as a Beloved ‘Saved by the Bell’ Star Who Always Made the Cast Feel Safe: ‘He Never Scolded Us’ ...Saudi Arabia

Mark-Paul Gosselaar is remembering the bond he shared with his late Saved by the Bell costar, Dennis Haskins. The actor, who played Zack Morris on the beloved ’90s teen sitcom, reflected on his days filming with Haskins, who played Principal Richard Belding, and the safety and respect he brought to the set, despite being a lot older than the main cast.

“Looking back on our relationship, I was just so thankful for the approach he took towards us,” Gosselaar, 52, told Entertainment Weekly while promoting his partnership with AstraZeneca. “He never treated us as a superior. He always leveled with us. He was probably [in his] late 30s when he was filming Saved by the Bell, and he’s in a room with all these goofy kids. I mean, we were not out of control, but we were 12-year-olds, 13-year-olds, and he always just had such respect for us and treated us with such respect, and it was genuine.”

Haskins, who died on September 27 at the age of 75 after battling Parkinson’s disease, first played Principal Belding on Good Morning, Miss Bliss, which followed some of the Saved by the Bell kids in junior high school, from 1988 to 1989. He reprised his role when the cast shifted to high school in Saved by the Bell from 1989 to 1993. He also appeared on various spinoffs, including Saved by the Bell: The College Years and Saved by the Bell: The New Class.

Gosselaar further remembered how Haskins had “grace” with the cast and admitted he probably wouldn’t have maintained that same patience if he were dealing with kids every day.

“He treated us almost like a big brother, and I’m really thankful for that and for how he made us feel that we were in a safe environment,” he said. “He never scolded us. I can only imagine. We were not unruly, but we were still, like, 20 years younger than him!”

“He really was a sort of mentor that we could go to and ask questions,” Gosselaar continued, adding that Haskins treated the cast like an “equal” rather than “another parent,” which he is “very thankful” for. “He was a great guy,” he said.

Gosselaar also noted that he sadly hadn’t kept in touch with Haskins in recent years and the last time he saw him was during the Saved by the Bell reunion on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in February 2015. He had tried to reach out while Haskins was dealing with his illness, but hadn’t heard back.

“I’m sad. We lost touch with him a few years ago,” he shared. “It seemed like he didn’t want to burden anyone with what he was going through, which is unfortunate. I would’ve loved to talk to him. We reached out, but never got a word from him. But you have to respect somebody’s wishes.”
