Jeremy Wade has spent decades getting dangerously close to creatures most of us would rather encounter behind aquarium glass, so his pick for the best-tasting fish he has ever eaten was bound to be something a little more interesting than salmon.
The River Monsters star once told Outside that “Without a doubt,” the honor goes to tambaqui, a massive freshwater fish native to the Amazon and Orinoco river basins.
Wade explained that the fish gorge on fruits, seeds and nuts when the rivers flood, packing on fat before being slowly grilled over an open fire.
That diet also explains the vicious teeth.

Tambaqui can grow up to 3.5 feet long, according to Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium, and have flat, molar-like teeth used to crush nuts. Shedd even notes that the fish’s mouth is “not unlike our own” when it comes to handling different foods.
So, can you actually eat Jeremy Wade’s favorite fish without booking a flight to the Amazon?
Sort of.
As of Oct. 31, Parade could not verify a U.S. restaurant currently serving tambaqui, despite several older menu listings floating around online. If you want the full restaurant experience, Manaus, Brazil, is a much safer bet. Tambaqui de Banda, beside the Teatro Amazonas, currently features grilled tambaqui, tambaqui ribs and other preparations on its menu.

But Americans willing to do the cooking themselves aren’t completely out of luck.
Master Cut Meat Market in Marlborough, Massachusetts, currently lists half-tambaqui for $14.49 per pound through its online ordering system. Another Massachusetts Brazilian market, Vitoria Meat Market in Plymouth, lists both whole tambaqui and rib pieces for delivery.
The fish is also making a push into the broader U.S. market. At the 2026 Seafood Expo North America in Boston, Brazilian producers showcased meaty tambaqui “ribs” as a potential stadium-friendly seafood option.

And despite the fish’s exotic résumé, federal law isn’t what is keeping it off most American menus.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection says most personal quantities of seafood are admissible, although travelers must declare food and wildlife products when entering the country. For commercial shipments, the FDA requires imported seafood to meet the same safety and labeling standards as domestic food, with registered facilities and prior notice required for incoming shipments.
Tambaqui also does not appear on the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s current list of federally prohibited injurious fish, which may sound ironic considering recent reports of piranha invading American waterways.
So yes, you can order Wade’s favorite fish in the U.S.—if you’re prepared to cook it yourself.
If you want it slowly grilled over an Amazonian fire the way he remembers it, however, you may want to keep that passport handy.
