IRONDEQUOIT, N.Y. — Trick-or-treaters filled Somershire Drive on Saturday for the first Halloween on a Saturday since 2020.
News10NBC’s Declan Stablow reported live from the neighborhood, where residents said they wait all year for this night. The street gets so busy that parts of it are closed off, and neighbors said they see thousands of trick-or-treaters every year.
A man who moved to the area just weeks before Halloween said his neighbors left him bags of candy so he would not run out. Another resident said she bought more than 2,000 pieces of candy last year and it was not enough, so this year she bought 2,500.
“It’s a really big part of the culture. I think it’s something that brings the whole neighborhood together. Everyone looks forward to it. Everyone talks about what they’re going to do every year and it’s just super exciting. Like I know some neighborhoods have Christmas or whatever but on summer, it’s Halloween and we go back every year,” said Kevin Polyak.
Neighbors said trick-or-treating usually continues until about 9 or 10 p.m. To keep everyone safe, Irondequoit Police Chief Scott Peters said the department would have extra patrols out Saturday night. Officials said Rochester police and state police would also have additional patrols across the city and on the roads.
