While most people know Willie Nelson as a country music legend, he’s also a talented actor. And for one Western he starred in based on his 1975 album Red Headed Stranger, he walked away with more than just a great performance on film — he also had a whole movie set of his own.

For the movie adaptation, a full Western town set was built, including a chapel, a saloon, and more, located on his own property in Texas. While the original script planned for the town to burn to the ground, Nelson had grown fond of it, and he requested a change. After the movie finished filming, the Western set, which he named Luck, remained standing.

In the decades since, the location has grown to be much more. Over the years, it has hosted many private events and photoshoots, although these days, it’s most well-known as the site of the Luck Reunion festival, which takes place outside of SXSW.

The festival features a few different stages and has hosted a slew of different artists. For the 2026 edition, there were over 45 performers, including St. Vincent, Trampled by Turtles, Booker T. Jones, and of course, Nelson himself.

Luck Reunion co-founder, CEO, and creative director, Matt Bizer, described the festival to Hop Culture in 2023: “It is a celebration of music, food, and community that annually makes a pilgrimage to Willie Nelson’s ranch to celebrate not just a legacy, but to help carry the torch of a community created around a lifestyle.”

But along with the various events that take place at the location, Luck is also a home for many rescued horses. There are over 70 that roam freely around the land.

Nelson said of the horses, via Hello!, “They get hand-fed twice a day. They were just ready to go to slaughter is probably the last thing they remembered, so they’re happy horses.”

“When you’re here, you’re in Luck, and when you’re not, you’re out of Luck,” he concluded. Nelson also lives there with his wife, Annie D’Angelo, whom he has been married to since 1991.
