Bob Dylan revisited one of his most haunting songs on October 27, though fans who know the original may have been surprised by what they heard. Performing “Not Dark Yet” for the first time in seven years at Mitsubishi Electric Hall in Dusseldorf, Germany, Dylan turned some of its darkest lyrics into something upbeat.
The performance was unlike any of the song’s 191 previous live renditions over the past three decades. Dylan played it in just 4 minutes and 30 seconds, cutting two minutes off the 1997 studio version without leaving out any verses.
Dylan also added a subtle reggae feel, giving the song a lighter sound than the original. That shift made lyrics like “sometimes my burden is more than I can bear” and “I know it looks like I’m movin’, but I’m standin’ still” sound almost cheerful by comparison.
Dylan has been returning to Time Out of Mind throughout the tour, introducing new versions of “Trying to Get to Heaven” and “Million Miles” at recent stops. Released in 1997, the album was a major milestone in his career and won the Grammy for Album of the Year.
Despite its success, Dylan has expressed reservations about Daniel Lanois’ production. “[The album] got off the tracks more than a few times, and people got frustrated,” he told Rolling Stone in 2001. “I got so frustrated in the studio that I didn’t really dimensionalize the songs. I could’ve if I’d had the willpower. I just didn’t at that time, and so you got to steer it where the event itself wants to go.”
He went on to criticize the album’s overall sound, saying, “I feel there was a sameness to the rhythms. It was more like that swampy, voodoo thing that Lanois is so good at. I just wish I’d been able to get more of a legitimate rhythm-oriented sense into it … It was tricky trying to steer that ship.”
Dylan may have had mixed feelings about the recording, but its lyrics have continued to resonate with audiences. Forbes recognized the song on its “Greatest Rock Song Lyrics of All Time” list, alongside selections from Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen and Bruce Springsteen.
The publication specifically praised the lyric, “I ain’t look for nothing in anyone’s eyes/Sometimes my burden is more than I can bear.” Forbes said the lines “are characteristic of the magnificence of Time Out Of Mind, one of the greatest albums ever about aging and mortality.”
