In March 2023, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Price Tower in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, sold for a token $10, according to The Art Newspaper. The tower, Wright’s only skyscraper, was completed in 1956 and was named a National Historic Landmark in 2007.
The buyer was Copper Tree Group, owned by Cynthia and Anthem Blanchard, per The Art Newspaper. It bought the building from its nonprofit owner, the Price Tower Arts Center, according to Architectural Record. The couple agreed to pay down about $600,000 in debt and put $10 million into rehabilitating the tower.
The rehabilitation didn’t push through, however. Copper Tree announced in August 2024 that it would close the tower on Sept. 1, with the building more than $2 million in debt, Architectural Record reported.
The Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy, which holds a preservation easement on the building, objected to the sale of protected items. “The owners have no right to sell protected items without our approval,” executive director Barbara Gordon said at the time.
In May 2024, Copper Tree agreed to sell the tower to McFarlin Building, a company that revives historic properties, for $1.4 million, according to The Art Newspaper. The Blanchards later backed out and listed the building for auction with a $600,000 minimum bid. McFarlin sued in September 2024.
In January 2025, Washington County Judge Russell Vaclaw ordered the sale to go ahead, after the owners ignored a court order to restore utilities to the empty building. “There’s too much at stake here,” he said, per The Art Newspaper.
Copper Tree filed for bankruptcy that month, claiming it had only $216 in the bank, The Art Newspaper reported. A Chapter 7 auction was set for May 6, 2025, with a minimum bid of $1,539,287, according to News On 6.
No competing qualified bids arrived. The bankruptcy court approved the sale to McFarlin for $1.4 million, finding it “fair and equitable,” per KJRH. The deal closed on May 5, one day before the auction, Architectural Record reported.
McFarlin is part of Brickhugger LLC, which is run by the Snyder family and restored the Mayo Hotel in Tulsa, according to News On 6. The family plans about 20 hotel rooms and 20 furnished residences, plus a museum on Harold C. Price’s top two floors and a restaurant named for architect Bruce Goff. The goal is to open by summer 2027.
The Conservancy said in March 2026 that all of its litigation over the tower had been resolved, per KJRH.
Other landmarks have been rescued, too. In 2018, Ford paid $90 million for Michigan Central Station, and restoring it and its campus cost nearly $950 million.
