Scary season may be almost over, but that doesn’t mean it’s time to give up the ghost stories. In fact, some of them bring heart and meaning, and that’s exactly the case with Reese Witherspoon’s November 2026 book club pick, The Great Whatever by Shannon Sanders.
When sharing the release in her email newsletter for the Reese’s Book Club, which is completely free to sign up for, she shared, “This novel about family and tradition is the perfect read to bring home for the holidays.”
The Great Whatever is a story of love and loss. It’s one of returning to a home steeped in history and legacy. Aubrey Lamb is struggling with grief, while also dealing with debt and just general life problems. She thought living in the city would be the best thing, but when she inherits a Tennessee farm, she’s excited to head back to the quiet in the hope of getting her finances back on track.
While there, she discovers that she’s not alone. There are four ghostly ancestors still on the property, and soon family secrets and generational rivalries are discovered. There’s a complicated legacy from the past, and Aubrey needs to work out what type of future she wants and whether saving the family farm and ancestral home is worth it.
Courtesy of Henry Holt and Co.When sharing more about creating the story, Sanders shared, “In the earliest drafts of the story, I knew I wanted to explore those figurative hauntings — the way the Lambs’ shared ancestry might seed other commonalities, from their deepest-held beliefs to their inside jokes and musical tastes.”
She went on to share that the ghosts have the opportunity to live in multiple ways while in the story. There are moments of their own story told from their own point of view, and then there are moments when other characters can discuss the legacy that they left behind.
The heart of the story is also one of race. Aubrey’s ancestor who bought the land was one of the first Black landowners in the community, and that holds weight in itself. He wanted to offer his family a homestead so they could flourish, but sometimes that hope for the future becomes a burden.
Reviews are mostly positive, with many comments about how great the narrator of the story is. It’s one of the ghosts who is hell-bent on keeping the farm in the family. Others have praised the character of Audrey and how she connects with her ancestors throughout the tale.
The Great Wherever was released in July 2026 and is the perfect read for a month about homecoming and family.
